Weekend Getaways for Spring

After a long, cold winter, cabin fever has given way to spring fever. No longer hampered by drifts of snow or bulky sweaters, it is time to pack up and take off for a long weekend mini-break.

My number one place to head for a little weekend getaway is Memphis, Tennessee. It does not matter what time of year you choose to visit Memphis, there is no way you could ever run out of things to see or do. Everyone should visit Graceland at least once in their lifetime. A tour of Elvis Presley's home is truly a once in a lifetime experience. The mansion tour is about $30 a person, and the house is filled with memorabilia and personal possessions of the King of Rock and Roll.

When visiting Memphis, it is imperative that you set aside an entire day (and night) to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of Beale Street. Birthplace of the Blues, Beale street has a year-round Mardi Gras Feel. Enjoy the Voodoo Chicken at the King's Palace restaurant, or have lunch at BB King's place. While Beale street is exciting, Midtown Memphis is home to local artisans, indoor flea markets, more great restaurants, as well as any number of street festivals.

When you plan your Memphis mini-break, consider staying at the Heartbreak Hotel, located right across the street from Graceland, to get some much needed sleep as well as indulge in a little Elvis Mania. While your hotel stay in Memphis may not be expensive, be sure to bring plenty of cash because the shopping is to die for, and you will want one of everything.

Virginia Beach is another favorite getaway spot. In addition to the gorgeous beaches for lounging, tanning, and relaxing, Virginia Beach is home to many interesting and fun attractions. Spend the day exploring water fun at Ocean Breeze Waterpark, take a sunset Adventure Cruise, go para-sailing, or tour the Cape Henry Lighthouse. Virginia beach is also home to many golf courses, if that happens to be your pleasure, including Heron Ridge and Lynnhaven Golf Park. Plan to stay at the Seagull Motel, it is located on the beach, costs only about $80 a night, and is locally owned and operated. It is located at 2613 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA. Another great place to disappear for a weekend is Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Gatlinburg is the wedding capital of the south, for good reason. Situated in the Smoky Mountains, you are surrounded by fresh air and breath-taking views. I suggest reserving a cabin in Gatlinburg to enhance your Smoky Mountain experience. From my experience, the realtor's that rent the cabins or chalets are professional, knowledgeable, and very helpful. You can rent a chalet for as little as $130 a night. While you are in Gatlinburg, be sure to make time to visit Ripley's Aquarium, Dollywood, shop the Mountain Mall for unique mementos and gifts, and maybe renew your vows at one of the many adorable chapels.

Keep in mind that you may need a vehicle with four wheel drive to get to some parts of this mountain paradise. There is just one word of warning,if you are unmarried, or in an alternative relationship, avoid the Gatlinburg Inn. The proprietors have an antiquated idea of what constitutes a couple. That aside, enjoy a full weekend in Gatlinburg, Tennessee for under $2000.
