Weekend Wrap: Spurlock Strikes Again

Please, End 'Happy Endings' Right Now

Tim O'Brien
The weekend wrap means plenty of unanswered questions. To be honest, I do not care if many go unanswered. By the time they do, I am on to other matters.
- Morgan Spurlock is coming out with a film titled "Pom Wonderful Presents the Greatest Movie Ever Sold." From the person who brought us "Super Size Me," Spurlock no doubt will receive a great deal of attention for this adventure. The question that was being bantered about with this one was, "would any advertisers" hop on board? The answer is no and yes, if that makes any sense. It hits April 22. Meanwhile, the trailer is out for "The Rise of the Planet of The Apes," which is further proof that Hollywood really is running out of ideas. Can another big screen 3D epic of "Gilligan's Island" be far off?
- Are you mad yet at gas prices? Hello, media, get with this story and the price hikes on everything from toilet paper to paper clips. Come on, you aren't kidding anyone with the neglect for certain stories now that were major headlines a few short, yes short, years ago.
- As the Midwest prepares for an earthquake, at least 240 twisters hit the United States over the weekend. How about a drill for that? I know Iowa had one as did Wisconsin, but where is my home state of Illinois?
- Did I just hear that Nicolas Cage was bailed out by "Dog The Bounty Hunter"? I'm sensing a show that deals with bailing out celebrities.
- Nice. Miley Cyrus and Joan Jett perform together on "Oprah."
- The cat and mouse game continues between CBS and Charlie Sheen. So what if he goes back? I never watched the show anyway.
- Just how big is "Soap Opera Digest" anymore?
- No it's not just you. We all have forgotten about Libya, to a certain extent.
- I am reminded of the separation of church and state every time I vote - - at a church.
WEEKEND BO
It was "Rio" in a romp, to say the least. "Scream 4" came in second but not even close. Meanwhile, "Hop" doesn't drop that much and is in third. that means two of three are animated flicks that I will not see because that is one genre I leave alone for the most part. They really do not need my help or, truth be told, aren't affected when I take them to task. As for the Robert Redford directed film, "The Conspirator," it settled in ninth but a solid per screen average, noting it was only in 707 theaters. The movie splitting down political lines is "Atlas Shrugged," which is in 300 theaters. It faired pretty well, too."Soul Surfer," only fell 30 percent in its second week.
- What doesn't need funding? I'm tapped, folks.
- Earth Day event canceled. Wow, should it be for any reason?
FROM FRIDAY DUMP THAT I DID NOT POST (OOPS):
- OK, let's give it some more time before I dump it, but this is how it went down for me with "Happy Endings" on ABC. First, I have to admit I would never hang around with people like those portrayed here. I would be more like the "Seinfeld" crowd rather than a "Friends" clan and this is more like the latter. So, it should be fine for some. I watched the first
show and got through it, with a few chuckles, but no "laugh-out" loud moments like the commercials suggested. In fact, being left at the altar by a hot chick and then having her rejoin the group is ripe for a barrel full of guffaws,
right? Sure, it sets up angst and the "just missing another chance scenarios" that should make us either laugh or cry - - or turn the channel. Time will tell. But, at exactly 9:12 (CST) p.m. during the second show, I had enough. I turned to a rerun of "Seinfeld" and laughed out loud.
IN CLOSING: Odd. People who ripped Karl Rove before are often embracing him now because of his Sarah Palin and Donald Trump comments. Hmmm. By the way, some at NBC even doubt the Donald these days.
