Product Review: Special K2O Protein Water

Kellogg'sTM Special K® products have always been about losing weight. A quick visit to the Special K® site finds it to be a source for helpful weight loss information with direct links to the New Special K ChallengeTM, information from Shape® Magazine, Yahoo!® Health page, and even a Special K® Group at Yahoo!.

First Kellogg'sTM brought us a low calorie cereal to help us lose weight. Next, there were cereal bars. Then, there were protein snack bars. Now, just in time for everybody's New Year's resolutions, there is Special K's new protein water: Special K2OTM.

Special K2OTM Protein Water comes in three varieties: Strawberry Kiwi, Lemon Twist, and Tropic Blend. I found the product with the diet foods in the supermarket. I was able to get a four-pack of the Strawberry Kiwi flavor for this review. At $6.29 for a four-pack, the product costs more than most sodas and juices.

Each bottle in the four-pack contains 16 ounces of beverage. 16 ounces also represents a single serving size (one of my pet peeves is with beverages that package two servings in a single container). Each serving of Special K2OTM has only 50 calories. If you are trying to lose weight the low calorie content of this drink is better for you than a similarly sized serving of juice (240 calories) or soda (200 calories). None of the calories in Special K2OTM are from fat, so the product would also be good for use with low fat diet plans.

Other weight loss information indicates that protein can help eliminate food cravings between meals. Special K2OTM contains 5 grams of protein. I have some personal experience in using protein to curb hunger pangs. When I was struggling with mid-morning hunger my own doctor suggested I have a spoonful of peanut butter with my cereal each morning to help fight that hungry feeling that hit me every morning around 10:30 a.m. The peanut butter worked to eliminate food cravings for me, and this drink may work for some.

Special K2OTM also contains 10% of the recommended daily allowance of calcium, which makes it an excellent choice for women who are trying to increase their calcium intake. The label warns that it contains a milk ingredient, which is important to note for those who might have milk allergies. I also noticed that the list of ingredients includes whey protein isolate-which I assume is the source of the protein and the milk ingredients. According to research from the United States Department of Agriculture, whey protein has been found to decrease body weight and fat in overweight adults. On the downside, the product contains 30 mg of sodium, which might be a little high for those who are trying to watch their sodium intake.

I drank my Special K2OTM chilled and directly from the bottle. (The bottle actually recommends that you drink it chilled.) The taste was sweeter than I expected, although I couldn't actually discern a strawberry flavor. The texture of the drink was also good, it was not too thick, nor was it carbonated. I found Special K2OTM to be refreshing and it definitely quenched my thirst.

In conclusion, Special K2OTM seems to be a useful product with several unique dietary benefits. I hope that this weight loss information will help you with your diet plans. Personally, I would definitely buy this product again (although I would probably wait for a coupon or good sale).
