Weight Loss to Reduce Waist Size May Improve Health

Weight Loss Alone May Not Be Enough to Improve Health

Studies have repeatedly indicated that having a waist that is too large can equal health issues in the future. People with larger waists are reported to have more blood pressure issues, heart disease, cancer and other health concerns.

Doctors have recommended that everyone keep their waist at approximately half of their height. For instance, a person that is 5' 10" tall should have a waist no larger than 35". Most physicians will help a person understand their body mass index, often referred to as BMI.

The National Heart Blood and Lung Institute offers an online tool to help a person calculate their personal body mass index with the help of a physician. This is a number that is based on a weight and height formula, and may easily be determined by using their tool. A link for this site is available below this article.

The National Institute of Health recommends anyone with a BMI of 30 or more lose weight. Many find they lose weight yet still have a large waist. Some studies suggest it may be what a person is eating that causes fat distribution.

Some may feel those needing to lose weight would be the only ones with such health issues. However, those who appear slender yet have a waist that is more than recommended are also at risk.

At this point studies on weight loss to reduce waist size have not included every body type, age and size. It is understood that waist size is related to the fat around organs in the abdomen. This may determine if a person will have serious health issues.
