Over weight teenagers who consider having the surgery, have usually tried numerous amounts of different dieting techniques as well as exercise routine. They feel this is their last hope and chance to have a normal life.
Weight loss surgeries considered by most teenagers are:
Bariatric surgery- This surgery promotes weight loss by restricting food intake, and at times reducing the amount of calories and nutrients that go through your body.
Having this surgery done, in some cases will reduce an overweight teenager's risk of getting diabetes. But with every good there is also the bad. This surgery has many risks to it as well.
A risk of early complications such as bleeding, infection, leaks from the intestinal incision, and blood clots in the lower legs, that in some cases can go to the lungs and heart. Later complications can include malnutrition, and hernias.
The standard procedure to determine eligibility for surgery is a lot stricter with teenagers than it would be with adults. A Teenager is usually 300 or 400 pound before even being considered a candidate. The candidates also must have health issues and have tried other options before wanting the surgery.
An emotional evaluation is administered to both the candidate and the parental guardians. This will allow the doctors to make sure that everyone is supportive of this new lifestyle change. A lot of change will come with this surgery. A Candidate will have to get uses to extreme healthy habits, less food consumption, and a lot of exercise.
Doctors want teenagers to be able to understand, that this surgery isn't just a cosmetic fix and then done. It involves a lot of hard work and dedication. If procedures aren't followed through as instructed teenagers can end up in worse shape than they were previous to the surgery. A teenager must be emotionally ready to dedicate everything they have to this procedure.
A person who undergoes this kind of surgery will be forever continuing follow up visits to the hospital or doctors office for the rest of their lives. It is just a precaution to make sure there are no signs of infections or any other problems.
There is a lot to think about when considering this surgery, it may take years to fully understand and decide.
