BEAVERCREEK, OH - June 17, 2010 -During the past two decades there has been a remarkable increase in obesity in the United States. According data collected in 2008 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only the State of Colorado has a prevalence of obesity less than 20 percent.

The CDC also reports that the increased rate of obesity has coincided with a rise in diabetes to epidemic levels. Controlling the spread of these conjoined diseases requires education and weight management programs that are safe and effective. One Greene County clinic is making an effort to provide those resources.

In an effort to help Miami Valley residents to better understand the link between obesity and health, Beavercreek Chiropractic Clinic will be hosting an educational fundraising workshop focusing on weight loss beginning at 6 PM, Thursday June 17. Early registration is $8 per person or $10 at the door. Participants may choose whether to donate their registration fee to either the American Diabetic Association or the USO in support of those on active duty in the U.S. armed services.

Hosting the program will be Robert Ehmann, Joy to Life program coordinator, and Dr. Greg Palkowski, director of Beavercreek Chiropractic Clinic. "It has been reported by The Ohio State University Medical School that by the year 2018, over half of all Ohioans will be considered obese," Palkowski said. "The incidents of Type II Diabetes are almost twice the national average in Montgomery County alone."

The two-hour weight loss workshop will introduce the Gioia a Vita - Joy to Life nutrition and weight loss program, offered primarily through health care professionals for those patients who are considerably overweight. During the presentation, participants will learn about the physiological reasons for weight gain, motivations for losing weight and how the diet changes the body's chemistry.

Palkowski is a 1981 Magna Cum Laude graduate of the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Since going into private practice in 1983, he has treated many patients whose physical problems were either caused or compounded by a weight problem.

"This program resets the patient's internal energy source, directing it away from the predominant carbohydrate based food sources in our present diet and toward a healthier protein-based intake," Palkowski said. "Joy to Life is designed for the patient who wants to lose weight and improve their quality of life through better overall health." Following the workshop, attendees will receive a startup food plan to begin their first initial phase of treatment.

Beavercreek Chiropractic Clinic is located at 1654 Mardon Dr., just west of N. Fairfield Rd. off of Dayton-Xenia. The clinic offers complete chiropractic care and a variety of wellness programs.

Seating for this workshop is limited and pre-registration is suggested. For more information or to register for the class, call (937) 426-9265 or email drgreg@beavercreekchiro.com.
