Most people don't think of yoga when it comes to weight loss workouts, but you may be surprised at what types of weight loss yoga poses that can be done. These poses help to speed up your metabolism which means that you burn fat at a quicker pace even when you are resting. The great thing about practicing yoga when trying to lose weight is that while you are burning fat you are also sculpting lean and strong muscles.
The Key to Losing Weight with Yoga
There is just not one weight loss yoga pose that you should do. The key to actually losing weight with yoga is to practice the exercises on a regular basis. By doing 30-60 minutes of yoga 5 times a week you can get your recommended physical activity for the day to help you burn calories off. Simply doing these weight loss yoga poses for 10 minutes twice a week will not be effective for weight loss.
Examples of Weight Loss Yoga Poses
You want to be sure that you incorporate different types of poses for yoga in your workout routine. You should have a variety of exercises that involve standing, sitting, balancing, supine position (looking up), and prone position (looking down at the ground).
Examples of weight loss yoga poses that involve standing would be the half moon pose, toe to hand pose, palm tree pose, and mountain. Most of the standing exercises help to create better posture as well as work your core muscles.
There are hundreds of poses in yoga that involve sitting. Just because you are sitting doesn't mean that you are not still working your body. In fact many of the sitting poses are more advanced than you think. Some basic sitting yoga poses are child pose, easy pose, rabbit pose, and half lotus. For more advanced sitting weight loss poses try the full lotus and garland pose.
Balance is a major aspect of yoga. If you don't have that much balance right now, the great thing about yoga is that it helps you to build you your balance so you don't have to start off being absolutely balanced. Some of the more popular weight loss yoga poses for balance are the dancer, eagle, tiptoe pose, and half moon.
Supine position is when a person has their back towards the ground and their face is looking up. There are several different supine yoga poses that help to sculpt lean muscles. The more common supine exercises include bridge pose and supine hand to toe.
On the other hand prone position is when a person is looking down towards the ground and their back is up. Prone positions are very common in yoga. In fact some of the most popular and well-known yoga poses are in prone position. Downward dog, plank, and balancing table are just a few prone exercises in yoga.
Combine these different types of weight loss yoga poses into a sequence to give yourself a calorie burning workout that will not only have you losing weight but also sculpting a beautiful lean body.
