Weighted Vests for Dogs and How They Work

Weighted vests for dogs can be a healthy idea if you're looking to help your dog burn off some energy and build muscle mass. Here's how weight vests for dogs work.

There are two types of weighted vests for dogs: one with pockets that include weights and others that don't include the weights. The vests have pockets with zippers where you can insert weights to adjust the heaviness of the vest. The weights are half a pound to a pound.

Vests that don't come with weights can be used to hold various items to add weight to the vest. A dog will be able to carry up to 20 percent of its body weight. Either method you choose, work your way up in increasing the weight.

Weighted vests for dogs can be used for the every day walk in the neighborhood, during a special hike or during play in the backyard. Over time your dog will grow accustomed to wearing the vest and the added health benefits he or she experiences while wearing it.

When a dog wears a weight vest it creates a calming affect, according to dog trainers. This is especially beneficial for dogs that have aggression issues or a lot of energy to burn. The extra weight tires your pet out and decreases the desire to act aggressively or to misbehave. A 30-minute walk with a vest will have similar health benefits of an hour-long walk without. Muscle mass and speed are improved.

Weighted vests for dogs are made of a durable material that is lined for comfort. Some models include adjustable chest and girth straps to ensure a proper fit. They typically costs about $70 to $100 depending on the size you order.

One thing you should consider before you purchase a weight vest for your dog, is the advice of your veterinarian. Have he or she examine your pet beforehand so you know if this is a healthy option. Do not put a weighted vest on a dog younger than two years old. this is because it is still growing and can experience joint injuries.
