So for you, faithful seekers of the odd, I have found some very uniquely named towns for your enjoyment.
Such towns as Blow Me Down, Newfoundland, Crotch Lake, Dildo, Newfoundland as well as Vulcan, Alberta all found in Canada.
Don't rush to conclusions just yet though, the gold old United States is home to many of it's own quirky towns. Including Toad Suck, Arkansas named according to legend due to the fact that river man used to 'suck whiskey until they swelled up like toads.'
I couldn't write about weird towns without visiting my own home State. Missouri is home to 'Hot Coffee' which came to be after a popular in put up a sign proclaiming the fact, the town took on the name and it stuck. Missouri also has 'Humansville' which is less exotic in origin, a man named James G. Human founded the town and it was named after him.
There are of course dozens of other towns like Ding Dong, Texas, Cut and Shoot, Texas, Holy Moses, Colorado, Okay, Oklahoma, Last Chance, Colorado just to name a few.
So what do all these names have in common aside from the obvious? They are attention grabbers. With so many towns similar in name, or names that blend in, having something different sticks out, makes people remember you. Perhaps come back again. Many of these towns were named when they were founded centuries or more ago, and many townspeople today suffer to change them, often to no avail.
However, a more recent development is what worries me more than any 'Two Egg, Florida.' What is a true sign of the times is a town called 'Half.com' you read that right! The marketing dream made true thanks to some inventive people! With some monetary support offered for the town, the town agreed to change it's name and hence was born the first ever named dot com town. It just makes you wonder what's coming next!
One thing is for certain, these would make some great keepsakes (mugs, key chain, or how about a postcard from 'F***ing Austria" pronounced 'Fook') on your next road trip! It makes getting a 'stupid t-shirt' a little more fun!
