Weird February 2011 Holidays: Week 2

This is a continuum from a previous article. If you want to see the February holidays for week 1, visit here.

8. National Molasses Bar Day: Molasses is a thick, sticky syrup that is produced while refining sugar. Molasses bars are a popular sweet in Southern United States, but it originated from Europe during the 1500's. Although molasses is not as popular in baking like it was back then, it's distinct flavor is still desired in a variety of recipes, such as gingerbread, toffee, and fruitcake.

9. National Stop Bullying Day: With over one-third of children being bullied at some point during their school years, it's no wonder a day has to be set aside to spread awareness and teach prevention.
Read in the Bathtub Day: I'm not sure I know anyone who reads in the bathtub, but I suppose it would be relaxing if you like to take baths. So grab a book or magazine and soak away.

10. Plimsoll Day: Plimsoll Day commemorates the birth of Samuel Plimsoll. Plimsoll was born on February 10, 1824. He was a British politician mostly known for the Plimsoll line (a ling on a ship indicating the maximum safe draft).

11. Be Electrific Day: "Electrific" definition: Putting light where there was previously no light. In 1998, Carolyn Finch created this observance to honor the birth of Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb.

12. Oglethorpe Day: February 12, 1733 is the date that General James Edward Oglethorpe and his 100-man crew landed in what is know Savannah, Georgia. He named the land "Georgia" after King George II and became the colony's first governor.
Paul Bunyan Day: This fictional lumberjack has his own day for remembrance. The character was first created in 1910 by James MacGillivray, but was recreated by William Laughead in 1916 - the latter year's character being the modern Paul Bunyan.
Safety Pup Day: February 12th is dedicated to teaching children what to do and how to react in dangerous situations.

13. Madly In Love with Me Day: This is a day specifically set aside for women, but men can partake as well. On February 13, focus on self-love. Treat your mind and body well on this day and work on realizing your true dreams in life.
World Marriage Day: This annual event is sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter at the Archdiocese of New York . Recognition is given to married couple, with most of the focus on longest-married couples.

14. National Condom Day: February is National Condom Month, but there is also a National Condom Day. The is no better day to observe the benefits of condoms than Valentine's Day.
National Call in Single Day: Being single on Valentine's Day is a big downer for many singles. What better reason to not go to work on February 14th than being single.
National Donor Day: Because February 14th is known as a day of love, this day is also observed as National Donor Day. Registering to become an organ donor or donating blood is a great way to offer the gift of life to a stranger.
Valentines Day: If you have not heard of Valentine's Day, then you are living under a rock. However, it is perfectly OK to not celebrate this day. Many people believe this day is more proof of extreme over-consumption. On the other hand, many take advantage to shower his/her significant other with love, affection, and attention.
