Weird News Roundup for 10/12/2009

Amanda King
Welcome to the first edition of Weird News Roundup! Here, every Monday, you'll find the weird news that you missed because the media was concerned with something else. Don't be frightened- this will be short, sweet, and kind of cool. Let's get started.

That's Not A Dog, That's a Mini Horse.
Boomer, a 180 pound Newfoundland, is hoping to become the next Guinness World Record holder for World's Tallest Dog. Well, at least his owner Caryn Weber is hoping he'll take the title. Boomer just wants to drink from the kitchen sink. Weber is hoping that Boomer's measurements- 36 inches tall at the shoulders and 7 feet long from nose to tail- will be enough to fill the vacant spot left by Gibson the Great Dane. Gibson, who was 7 feet and 1 inch when standing on his hind legs, died recently in August. Good luck to Boomer and Caryn!

Poe Finally Put To Rest 160 Years After His Death
Even though it has been 160 years since his death, Edgar Allen Poe finally got the funeral he should have had. In 1849, less than 10 people attended his funeral. On October 11, 2009 a casket containing a life-size replica of Poe was taken through the town of Baltimore before being put to rest at Westminster Burying Ground, where the real Poe is buried. Many Poe fans gathered in period costume to pay their respects to the writer. The funeral was done to remember the birthday of the writer, which was 200 years ago. This event made a lot of goth kids happy.

929 Gallons of Moonshine Unearthed In the Mountains of North Carolina
In Wilkesboro, North Carolina someone was planning to throw a huge party. 929 gallons of moonshine was found in the North Carolina mountains, hidden under a shed. All that moonshine belonged to 63 year old Roger Lee Nance. He has been arrested for possessing non-tax-paid liquor with the intent to sell it. Maybe he was just stocking up. Just throwing that out there for consideration.

Japanese Menswear Company Creates the anti-H1N1 Suit.
Oh, all the crazy things the Japanese will create! Haruyama Trading, a menswear company in Japan, claims they have invented a suit that can protect the wearer from coming down with the H1N1 virus. The menswear company says it works because they gave the suit a coating of titanium dioxide which is supposed to kill 40% of the virus in 3 hours. If the suit does work, this is great for the business men that have to ride the crowded trains through Japan and fear bringing the virus home to their wives and children. The suit will also remain protective after repeated washing. The anti-H1N1 suit is available for $590 USD (53173.75 yen) and is a lot more convenient than a HAZMAT suit.

Great idea for a series. I had heard about the dog. I saw he was so big he could actually drink out of the kitchen sink just be lowering his head.

This is a great article, which probably means it is not getting so many page views. Less than 10 people at Poe's funeral? Sad but probably predictable given his general attitude.
