The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine's Day.

Teachers will receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, and then, sweethearts.

Chicago's post office rejected more than 25,000 cards on the grounds that they were so indecent; they were not fit to be carried through the U.S.. mail. This was during the late 1800s, an era when racy valentine's cards were very popular.

According to the condom company Durex, condom sales are highest around Valentine's Day which are 20 percent to 30 percent higher than usual.

According to facts provided by the U.S. Census Bureau Current Industrial Reports for 2006, the per capita consumption of candy by Americans in 2006 is 26 pounds.

There were also 21, 335 florists in the U.S. in 2005 employing 101,861 people.

There are only 2 towns in the U.S. named Valentine. One is Texas, the other is in Nebraska.
