Ah, Miami. A city alive with diverse people, flavorful food, beautiful coastlines, and of course, and nightlife to die for. But what about the Miami that you haven't seen? What about the Miami that you can't find in guidebooks? If you're looking for some unusual places to discover in Miami, you've come to the right place!

Sand Castle Builder on South Beach

If sun, sand, and ocean are at the top of your list, go see the sand castle builder on South Beach. Along the way you may end up finding some other sand castles that catch your attention. Miami is known for some pretty outrageous sand castles, so head on over for a look at art made from natural materials. If you want a day trip, try packing a picnic and spending the day catching some rays, breathing in the ocean air, and watching some sand castle construction.

Coral Castle

While we're on the topic of castles, perhaps the Coral Castle Museum would be of interest. From 1923 to 1951, Edward Leedskalnin carved over 1,100 tons of coral all by himself according to the Coral Castle Museum website! This place will have you staring in awe as you try to figure out how Leedskalnin accomplished this feat. All he would say when asked is that "he knew the secrets of the pyramids". The website has information such as hours of operation. coralcastle.com

The World Erotic Art Museum

If you want a racy getaway while in Miami, head on over to the World Erotic Art Museum. It's one of the largest collection of erotic art in the world and the owners are super friendly. Miami Kiteboarding

For those of you who haven't heard of it, kiteboarding is a water sport where a surfboarder uses the a large kite with hand-held strings to control the lift and pull he or she needs. It's very fun, very active, and you'll have a great time! www.miamikiteboarding.com

Street Performers of Miami

Street performers and vendors can be found all over the city! This is where you're going to find the true personality of Miami shining through and it's cheap. You're trip won't be complete until you've discovered some bizarre and interesting talents on the streets of Miami.

Beach Jogging

I guess the attraction would be South Beach, but the activity is beach jogging. This is sure to give you a great workout, let you see large expanses of South Beach, and there are even blogs dedicated to beach running on South Beach and suggested routes! www.joggingroutes.org

Parrots in Jungle Island

Okay, so this place is really cool AND it gives you a chance to get up close to some very pretty tropical birds. Not only is it fun, but you'll learn something too! jungleisland.com

Swim with the Dolphins

This may not be weird or wacky but it's definitely interesting! There are a couple places to do this in Miami. Try out Theater of the Sea or the famous Miami Seaquarium! www.theaterofthesea.com

These are generally considered the weirdest attractions Miami has to offer. Word has it the Flying Trapeze School, which offered trapeze lessons, and Laundry Bar, where you could wash your clothes and have a few specially made drinks while you wait, have closed. Also, many of the truly bizarre and interesting attractions appear on a year-to-year basis such as the Weird Miami Art Exhibit and artist-led tour of 2010.

So, in my opinion, the best way to discover Miami is to wander! Most of the oddities this city contains are hidden on back roads or are spread through word of mouth.
