Weirdsville - a Movie Review

Weirdsville is a 2007 movie starring Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley. The movie is a dark comedy set in the Canadian town of Weedsville. Scott and Wes star as Dexter and Royce, two junkies who are in over their heads avoiding drug dealers and Satan worshipers. Weirdsville is a quirky little movie that is surprisingly very entertaining. Warning: my movie review does contain plot spoilers.

Dexter is the quiet junkie who usually goes along with Royce's schemes. The current scheme is to sell drugs for the drug dealer Omar to pay off their drug debt. With the threat of having his thumbs cut off and realizing life is going nowhere, Dexter decides to quit drugs and spends a week detoxing. During that week, Royce and his girlfriend Maltida (played by Taryn Manning) are too busy binging on the drugs that they are suppose to sell to notice the absence of their friend. Maltida accidentally overdoses on drugs and Royce calls Dexter in a panic. Royce thinks Maltida is dead and talks Dexter into helping him bury her at an abandoned Drive-In theater. The night gets progressively worse as they interrupt a satanic cult performing a ritual sacrifice. To top off the night, the duo also decides to rob Jason Taylor (Matt Frewer), a rich citizen currently in a coma, in order to pay Omar back.

The movie is incredibly funny, full of oddball characters resulting in twists that should seem improbably but actually end up seeming very plausible. The dialog is so realistic in all its absurdity. Dexter and Royce have the best dialogue between each other. Maggie Castle as Treena, the inconspicuous Satan Worshipper, was a delightful surprise. She seems innocent enough in her prep school get up but has no problems kicking everyone's ass in her quest to complete the ritual sacrifice. I love the scene when she is making fun of the midget cop and then proceeds to kick his butt.

Scott Speedman as Dexter really shines as the quiet thinker who is trying to change his life but keeps getting dragged back down by his incredibly stupid friend Royce. I really enjoyed the dream sequences with him skating through town. I can't think of a single thing that I didn't like about the movie.

The movie is a bit out there but this indie flick doesn't take itself too seriously. The result is continuous 90 minutes of gasps and laughs. I give the movie 5 out of 5 stars.
