Neighborhood: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
Colorado Springs, CO 80906
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is the only zoo located on a mountain in the United States. Spreading over 146 acres, there are more than 750 animals, representing 142 species.

The attendance at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has increased 53% since 1989, and in 2004, the zoo had over 400,000 visitors. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has the highest attendance of any attraction in Colorado Springs that charges admission.

One of the popular stops along the way is the Giraffe exhibit. You can purchase special crackers and feed the giraffes right there! Find yourself handing out crackers to these large animals with tongues that can be 18 inches long. Along the way you can also see elephants, bears, large cats, gorillas and hippos.

To see the animal keepers interact with the animals, they offer pengiun feedings, elephant training demonstrations and hippo demonstrations. The animal keepers are also there to answer any questions you might have about the animals they are working with.

There are also stops along the way for kids to stop and enjoy. A kids play area and tot train and My Big Backyard which provides hands-on contact with rabbits, guinea pigs, goats and other barnyard animals. You can also enjoy pony rides for an additional charge. The zoo also offers programs such as Adopt an Animal, Animal Keeper Programs and Conservation Programs. They also have youth programs that include camps (for ages 5 - 15), Primate Pajama Party, Keeper Shadow for a Day and you can interview an animal keeper.

For groups of 15 or more, you can receive up to a 25% discount. This is great for daycares, preschools and church groups. You can also bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the zoo. They provide various tables and benches throughout the grounds.

When you are finished enjoying the zoo, you can make a trip up the the Will Rogers Shrine. This is included in your zoo admission. The shrine was being built for Will Rogers. However, he was killed in a plane crash in Alaska before the shrine was completed in 1935. You can now go in and tour the shrine and see the great view of Colorado Springs from the balcony.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is located 6,800 feet above sea level. The zoo is open 365 days of the year for your enjoyment.
For additional information about the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo or the Will Rogers Shrine, you can visit their website at www.cmzoo.org. While at their website, you can also go and watch the giraffes on their giraffe webcam.
