United States of America
The history of Nashville is quite interesting. Nashville is located in Georgia's 116th county. The county of Berrien was named for Attorney General John McPherson Berrien. Sometimes called "the American Cicero" because of his penchant for speaking and making a difference in people's lives, his interest in the state's history, helped to found the Georgia Historical foundation. The land in the area was once occupied by both the Creek and Cherokee Indian tribes. Three quarters of the land was "won" in the Land Lotteries of 1820, after the Creek War of 1814. The beginnings of the infamous Trail of Tears were in this area and time. The town of Nashville was named for General Francis Nash, a Brigidier General in the Revolutionary war. Nashville, Alapaha, Ray City and Enigma make up Berrien county. Nashville was chosen as the county seat due to its centralized location at a time where most of the area was devoted to the agriculture industry.
Today, many of those same families who gained the land in the lotteries, still reside here and are passionate about preserving the way of life that their ancestors brought to the area. That desire of preservation, along with the "new" families that have moved here and fell in love with the town are what makes this one of the best examples of what "the south" is known for. In Nashville, the majority of the businesses are locally owned, and the owners are usually right there on the premises when you do business with them. Even our local grocery store has its beginnings right here in town.
Recently, Nashville's Better Hometown and Berrien Historical Foundation, began a new campaign to promote our town as the "real" Nashville. Not to take away from Nashville, TN, but to show that Nashville fits every definition of what a real hometown should be. A committee was formed to bring in new businesses and to show that we deserve to be more than just a dot on the map.
So, make a trip to see Nashville. You won't be disappointed. You are more than welcome to make Nashville your hometown too....
