What is wellness? Are you a member of a wellness program yet? Notice the twist on yet, because if you do not realize it wellness programs surround you. Some of us are not aware of just how far the term "wellness" has exploded and what it really means to your health.

Wellness means something very different to each individual and it should. What is right or of concern to one individual can be unimportant to another person. There are programs that administer medical, mental, physical, spiritual, financial, emotional, occupational, social and intellectual wellness. Who had a clue there were that many components involved in making us a whole person, healthy or happy?

The basic concept is to feel good about yourself and be as healthy as you can. You do not have to join a wellness program or wellness center. However, you might want to keep an ear to the ground and listen or even explore some of these new and exciting concepts surrounding the health industry.

What is a bit surprising is that wellness programs are being implemented at corporate work centers, small, medium and large businesses, churches, chiropractic offices, medical offices, spas, wellness centers and gyms. They are also affiliated with some life and health insurance plans too.

Let us examine the pros and cons of a wellness program. So many employers are beginning to offer some form of health wellness plans that it can be very easy for you to get involved and that is a positive. Employers are creating their own unique programs and health ideas centered around their work forces. This may make it easier for you to purchase a healthy lunch at work or incorporate an afternoon walk or a 20-minute nap into your day with the bosses approval and encouragement.

When visiting a chiropractor for an adjustment they can make recommendations based on your physical condition, health and stress levels specific to their wellness program. Some organizations allow you to join and choose exactly what areas of wellness you wish to work on and for some people that could be the perfect way to a new beginning and better health.

Consider the cons to make an informed decision about how a wellness program may affect you. These can be expensive for an employer to set up. Some companies provide these programs free to employees, while other companies may be passing on all or a portion of the costs to employees. You might be able to get reduced insurance premiums by joining or if you already have a pre-existing health condition that prevents you from joining this could be considered a con.

Some large families with busy schedules or single adults with small children just do not have time for additional activities. If employers place too much emphasis on employees participation, this could cause a hardship on some individuals working for a company.

The whole idea about feeling good about yourself and being physically and mentally healthier is ambitious and a lot to think about. Learn and listen about wellness concepts. It could be a positive or a negative situation for you personally, but it is worth staying informed about health topics.
