Wendy's Anniversary Scam Menu Floods Internet

Snopes Catches This and Other Email Scams

Kelly Herdrich
Hold onto that quarter! An internet email circulated today announced that popular fast food chain Wendy's would be celebrating it's 60th anniversary. In honor of the anniversary, the email went on to claim that Wendy's would be offering 25 cent cheeseburgers at locations worldwide. Don't head out to the Wendy's location nearest you just yet, though. Wendy's announced that this email is fraudulant, and that they are not celebrating an anniversary or giving anything away today. Still aren't convinced? Popular fact-checking website Snopes is on the case, too.

The Wendy's Anniversary Scam

According to the Freelance Star, Wendy's came out with a statement today stating that a fraudulant email had been sent out today commenting on their anniversary and discounted burgers. In fact, Wendy's is only 39 years old, and Wendy's restaurants don't use email coupons. Floods of internet users have been researching Wendy's today in order to find the nearest Wendy's location or see the Wendy's menu. Put away your wallet, burger fans. Wendy's burgers aren't on sale today.

Snopes Gets in on the Action

Do you need more verification than this? Snopes is on the case, researching this email that falsely claimed that In-and-Out Burger and Wendy's (depending on the version of the email that you received) would be celebrating their 60th anniversary and offering free or discounted burgers today. While In-and-Out Burger is actually celebrating their 60th anniversary on Occtober 22, neither chain is offering free or sale burgers.

Other Email Scams that Snopes has Caught

The Wendy's anniversary email scam isn't the only one that Snopes has caught and reported on. Did you receive an email stating that Barack Obama was sworn in on the Koran? What about an email reporting that Barack Obama filed a lawsuit that required banks to give loans to poor people? Both of these email statements have been proven false and researched by Snopes.

The moral of the story? If you receive an email forward that catches your eye, check its validity at Snopes first. And don't head out to Wendy's expecting an anniversary deal today.
