Wendy's Dog Remembered

Lindzi Bel
In the News Observer this week, sadly Wendy's of Blue Ridge lost a very dear companion in late January, 07. The lovable creature many of the employees and customers came to love become ill with a type of canine lymphoma. "Naomi," was the name given to her by the former general manager and his wife. The couple who were managing the Wendy's restaurant when Naomi first made her home there.

The exact time when the shy, stray dog made her arrival is unknown. The employees who were working around the time estimate the year to be late 1996. She gave birth to one liter of pups before she was taken to the vet and spayed. Luckily, the current general manager fell in love with Naomi and unselfishly took over the responsibility of caring for her. She would take Naomi to the vet for her check-ups and grooming.

Naomi was a joy to children and even some adults who came through the drive through window. She could be seen resting in her igloo at one corner of the building wreaking havoc in the flower beds at the menu board. Mostly she would find a place to catch a little nap and wait for another customer to ask, "Where's the Wendy's dog?" On several occasions, customers have visited the establishment just to see their "mascot."

If a vehicle were to be speeding through the area, Naomi would bark as if she was saying to them to slow down. Several employees and regular customers would be greeted by her almost each and every time they pulled into the parking lot. She would dance around and whine until she got a treat from somebody. She did not let very many people into her circle of trust. She was very adamant about not being touched. Some employees could sneak a head rub if she were sleeping in her doghouse. She was spoiled by customers and employees daily. She ate better than most animals dream about eating. She has been spotted following employees who stop across the street at the Hometown Foods. She would look both ways before crossing the street.

Wendy's would like to thank all the people who helped keep her safe and healthy. Truly, Naomi will be missed, but her memory will remain in the hearts f many.

In memory of Naomi.
