Were You Ever in a War Event

Saturday May 14, 2011

This event will take place at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor on May 14th from 1 - 4:00 pm.

It will help you learn where to look, what to look for and how to preserve the objects and memories of your own family participation in American military history.

Workshops will be given by Michelle Phillips the Paper Conservator from the NYSOPRHP Resource Center. She will discuss how to care for your collection of military papers and how to preserve them. Christopher Zarr is the education specialist for the National Archives and he will educate you on the trail to locate your ancestor's records.

The National Hall of Honor not only hopes to preserve the stories of Purple Heart recipients, but to educate visitors about the Purple Heart award and the recipients who sacrificed on behalf of our country.

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is at 374 Temple Hill Road (Route 300), in the Town of New Windsor, NY 12553. You can reach them by phone: (845) 561-1765 or on the Web at: http://www.thepurpleheart.com

They are open Monday - Saturday, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Sunday, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM and closed on Holidays except for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day and Presidents Day.

Would've been great to be a part of an event like that.

My dad was offered a purple heart, but declined; the bullet grazed his head but killed his NCO, who was behind him. Survivor's guilt...

It's sad how many military papers/medals have not been properly cared for. Sounds like an event worth going to.
