We're Pregnant: Breaking the Surprise News to the Family

Riza DP
My pregnancy was unexpected. My husband and I planned that we will try to make a baby one year after our marriage. We've been in a long distance relationship for 2 years and few months. He lived thousands of miles away from me; him in the US and me in the Philippines. So, we wanted to spend enough time alone together as a couple, get to know more of each other and most importantly, fill the many days we missed of being apart with each other's physical presence, care and love.

In our two months after marriage, my period was delayed. I didn't worry quite much about it because I had instances of missing my monthly sickness for a week or two. Besides, I had symptoms of my menstruation like cramps. Almost two weeks from being delayed, my husband surprised me one night with a home pregnancy test kit on his way home from work. I was stunned to found out that I was positive! It was a news that took me a little white to sink in to my system.

Christmas News

Three days after we knew we were positive was Christmas day. We had a family get-together to attend that day at my husband's relatives. Before we head to their place, I saw my husband wrapping something and put it inside a Cadbury Chocolate Biscuit empty can. I didn't bother to scrutinize.

Relatives met us with smiles and greetings. My in-laws were inside the kitchen busy preparing. I gave each of them hugs. I saw my husband handing the Cadbury can to his mom. She asked who was that for? She might have thought we missed to give her that gift on the eve of Christmas so we're giving it to her on the perfect day to give presents. My husband answered with a smile, told her that it's for her and dad. I didn't mind to know what was inside the can and I busied myself with other stuff when I heard my mother-in-law asking: "Is this true?" Hearing that remark I knew what she meant. What she got on her hands were the pregnancy test kit I used days ago. My cheeks turned pinkish from blushing, feeling a little bit embarrassed. I didn't expect that my husband would break the news to the family on that manner. Everyone was delighted and congratulated us. My in-laws gave me hugs and told me to take care of myself.

I called my family back in the Philippines that night to crack the news. My mother and sister were more happy that I was pregnant. They said that it's high time for me to have a baby since I would be 35 years old when I have my firstborn.

My husband broke the news to the family so perfectly even if I did not expect that was how he was going to do it. He is indeed a man of surprises. It was a great and perfect Christmas for everyone. My in-laws will be having another grandchild to play and spoil with. My mother at home will have her fourth grandchild, and this time it's an English speaking grandchild.
