Minimum Weight and Length of Fish Qualified for a West Virginia Fish Citation

West Virginia offers anglers an opportunity to catch a wide-variety of species of fish. From creeks, ponds, lakes and rivers, as an angler you can find fishing spots throughout West Virginia. West Virginia has a fish citation program as well where you can get a certificate as long as your fish meets the minimum standards for a citation as identified by the WV DNR.

Below are the minimum standards of applying for a fish citation in the state of West Virginia:

Brook Trout-must weigh 1 ½ lbs and be 15 inches in length

Brown Trout-must weigh 4 lbs and be 21 inches in length

Rainbow Trout-must weigh 4 lbs and be 21 inches in length

Golden Trout-must weigh 4 lbs and be 21 inches in length

Largemouth Bass-must weigh 5 lbs and be 21 inches in length

Smallmouth Bass-must weigh 4 lbs and be 20 inches in length

Spotted Bass-must weigh 1 ½ lbs and be 14 inches in length

Rock Bass-must weigh 1 lb and be 11 inches in length

Crappie-must weigh 1 ½ lbs and be 15 inches in length

Sunfish-must weigh 1 lb. and be 10 inches in length

Striped Bass-must weigh 7 lbs and be 25 inches in length

Hybrid Striped Bass-must weigh 7 lbs and be 24 inches in length

White Bass-must weigh 2 lbs and be 15 inches in length

Musky-must weigh 15 lbs and be 40 inches in length

Tiger Musky-must weigh 15 lbs and be 25 inches in length

Chain Pickerel-must weigh 2 lbs and be 20 inches in length

Northern Pike-must weigh 8 lbs and be 32 inches in length

Walleye-must weigh 5 lbs and be 25 inches in length

Sauger-must weigh 1 ½ lbs and be 17 inches in length

Yellow Perch-must weigh 1 lb and be 13 inches in length

Channel Catfish-must weigh 6 lbs and be 25 inches in length

Flathead Catfish-must weigh 10 lbs and be 29 inches in length

Bullhead Catfish-must weigh 2 lbs and be 16 inches in length

Blue Catfish-must weigh 10 lbs and be 29 inches in length

Fallfish-must weigh 2 lbs and be 18 inches in length

Freshwater Drum-must weigh 10 lbs and be 27 inches in length

Carp-must weigh 15 lbs and be 31 inches in length.

All the fish species above are the minimum qualifications to obtain a fish citation from the WV DNR. You must fill-out a citation application, which you can find it by clicking here. Also, any fish certified by weight must be weighed on a scale certified by the WV Dept. of Labor and must be weighed in the presence of a witness. If you certify the fish by length then you must take a picture and have a witness to sign off on the application as well. Anytime you submit an application you will have to pay a $5 fee that you'll submit along with the application.
