West Virginia Gem Mines

Gem Mining is Just One Fun Thing to Do in West Virginia

Randy Inman
Gem mining is a great hobby for the whole family to enjoy and this article will tell you about some West Virginia gem mines to visit. Kids love gem mining because you get wet and dirty, but sometimes find cool stuff. So if you live in or are visiting the state you may want to go to a West Virginia gem mine. I will have the contact information in a web link for each mine mentioned in this article. If you want to learn what to expect at a gem or gold mine read this article. You can also read this Geology.com article for more information about gemstones in the United States.

Most gem or gold mines have a gift shop where you can buy already created jewelry or where you can have some custom made. You can also visit this site for a list of places for custom jewelry in West Virginia. The gem or gold mines will also have facilities for you to clean up at before you leave.

Someplace Special Gem Mine

The Someplace Special Gem Mine is located near Shady Spring West Virginia, get directions here on their website. You can buy a bucket of ore here and use the flume to find gold, silver or gemstone. You can pan for the gold or silver at the flume or use one of their shaker boxes. Their website claims that one bucket of ore produced 5,000 carrots or 2.2 pounds of gemstones. They can turn your gemstone finds into fine jewelry right on the premises. The current price is $10 for a 2 ½ gallon bucket which is very reasonable.

Seneca Caverns

Not only can you enjoy West Virginia's largest caverns you can do some gem mining while you are there, visit their website for more information. What I love about Seneca Caverns is that you can mine for gemstones OR fossils. Current prices are $5.50 for a 3lb bag of gemstone rough, or $11 for a 5lb bag of fossil rough. There are also plenty of other fun things to do at Seneca Caverns and they have a restaurant.

If anyone knows of any more West Virginia Gem Mines please leave a comment on this article. I will try to do an update in the future. But either of these two will be a great place to check out in beautiful West Virginia. There are many other fun things to do in West Virginia in addition to the mining. You can enjoy sight seeing, fishing, swimming, skiing and many other activities.

My family went to Some Place Special Gem Mine. We had a great time brought home 28lbs of gems and even found some gold. Farmer Joe is a very nice gentleman and a pleasure to talk to can't wait to go back. Thanks for the great time Joe.

Been to several gem mines and i always go back to Someplace Special as i find lots of great gemstones there. I cut stones and the quality that we find there is great Went last weekend ,took the metal detector and ended up finding a bunch of old coins as well. Have yet to look for gold, but plan that on an upcoming weekend soon. All in all, Someplace Special Gem Mine, is just that... someplace special

Good review. My former mother and sister-in-law went to one in WV. They both came back wth raw emeralds and rubies about the size of the palm of my hand. Said when they found their stones the staff went nuts because they didn't see them that big often and here these two found a half dozen of two varieties.
