West Virginia Mountaineers Versus LSU Tigers in College Football

William Bass
West Virginia Mountaineers are currently ranked number 22 and the LSU Tigers are ranked at number 15. The two college football teams will square off on Saturday nigh, September 25, 2010 at 9 p.m. at Tiger Stadium or better known as "Death Valley". Both teams are 3-0 on the season and this match will help both teams see where they are at this point in the season. Plus, it will give the winner bragging rights related to the SEC or Big East conference.

The Big East is down this year with real no marquee wins and if West Virginia wins then it will be some swagger back to the Big East Conference. If LSU wins then this may just be a down year for the Big East football conference. However, the game should come down to who has the least turnovers and which teams defense takes control of the game.

West Virginia Mountaineers are coming into Baton Rouge with sophomore sensation Geno Smith at quarterback who has a total of 3 games as a starter. Also, the Mountaineers feature speedy backs with seniors Noel Devine, Jock Sanders and sophomore wideout Tavon Austin. However, the Mountaineers defense is the key to a successful season. The defense has shutdown their first three opponents on the ground and had a sack fest against Maryland last Saturday in recording 8 sacks in the game.

LSU Tigers have struggled on offense this year and have relied on their stout defense and special teams to put them at 3-0 on the season. The Tigers are led on offense by junior quarterback Jordan Jefferson who has passed for 344 yards so far this season. Running back Stevan Ridley leads the Tigers on rushing the ball and has a total of 318 yards on the ground so far this season. However, the LSU Tigers rely on their defense to control the game with cornerback Patrick Peterson who also is a kick returner averaging 29 yards on each return.

The Mountaineers must contain Peterson and use their speed if they expect to come out of Death Valley with a win. The spread is a 10 point favor to the LSU Tigers, but if the Mountaineers can eliminate turnovers then this will become a game that comes down to the wire.
