April 17, 2009 Update: Westboro Baptist has not placed Binghamton on its schedule of pickets yet, but they assured me they are coming. More time for counter pickets to get ready to meet them.
I was in Binghamton, New York today to pick up my son for Spring break. I stopped and took photos of the scene of the shootings at the American Civic Center.
When I got home, it occurred to me that the Westboro Baptist Church and their God Hates Fags campaign which recently protested in Albany, New York, probably will show up at the funerals of some of the victims of the shooting in Binghamton. So I e-mailed the church and asked if the Westboro Baptist Church would be picketing the funerals of the victims of the Binghamton shooting. Below is my e-mail and the response from the Westboro Baptist Church. (I have deleted my e-mail address because it is my personal one.)
I also found their press release and have included it at the bottom of this article.
Thankfully, it is too late for the Westboro Baptist Church to picket at some funerals. Layla Khalil, a 57 year old Iraqui and mother of a fellow graduate student in the same department as my son, was buried yesterday.

It is so sad to see the lack of Christian Love being demonstrated toward those who are mourning the loss of thier loved ones. This is a terrible witness of Christianity

God has a reason for everything, good in the the pea-brained eyes of man. Which sees very little. And God's will is perfect, in fact the trine God is the only 'being' that is perfect.
And as all citizens can say things such as, and I quote "Fred Phelps can go get crushed by a gas pump' which is one stance, the members of Westboro Baptist Church have that same freedom, to freely speak. The only reason that judges have said ruled out free speech, in some cases, is if the individuals would be, "crying 'FIRE!' in a crowded theatre, which thus could cause emotional distress." But what if it actually on fire, though? Think of that real hard, why don't you.
Besides, aside from your 'hurt feelings', those kids are dead. Get over yourselves! You mourn of a body that is going to rot and decay, that is already past saving. When what you should have, and still be worryed about was there soul, and your own. Or, rather, your own now. This live, is very short compared to that which is to come.

I'm beginning to rethink some of my ideas about free speech. Picketing a high school is one thing; picketing a funeral is something else altogether.
What this church is doing is diabolical.
