Western Crafts for Kids

L.J. Mehlenbacher
Have you ever noticed that with kids there is a romantic fantasy about the Wild West? The reason behind this is because most kids are drawn to cowboys & Indians, adventure and the Wild West towns. Back in the Wild West days, things were created with materials on hand and the children had an imagination. So, the next time your kids are stuck within the house, try making this craft; and let your kids' imagination take off and bring the Wild West to life for them.

The project listed below is a Western Town. This town is completed with plastic horses, farm animals, and cowboys.

Materials:
Assorted boxes (pasta, cereal, crackers, oatmeal boxes)
Plastic farm animals (can get these at the Dollar Tree for a $1.00 for a lot of farm animals)
Glue
Construction paper
Markers
Crayons
Toothpicks
Plastic cowboys
Cork board
Sand

Directions:
1. Arrange the boxes on the cork board.
2. Glue construction paper around the boxes.
3. Have the kids color and draw the doors, windows, and signs on the boxes.
4. Glue the boxes to the cork board.
5. Pour glue on the remaining cork board and sprinkle with sand.
6. Make toothpick fences and put the farm animals in.
7. Complete the "town" with plastic cowboys and horses.

Kids love to play with boxes, so why not have a purpose for those boxes. All it takes is boxes and some imagination and the kids will be occupied for hours at a time. For an even bigger bang to this craft, make the kids' window and doors open and close. It is a fun and inexpensive way to let your kids have the Wild West with all the adventure.
