Western Kentucky's Best Fishing and Camping Spots

Fishing Kentucky Lake

Samantha Jean Lincoln
Kentucky is home to over 400 lakes, rivers, pounds, streams, reservoirs and other bodies of water for the fishermen to choose from. Here in Calloway County there are several great places to fish, depending on what kind of fish you want to go after as some places are better than others. Murray, KY and the surrounding area is ideal for fishing, Kentucky Lake is just 20-miles from the Murray area and is known as the "Crappie Capitol' of America and possibly the world. The lakes and all the other bodies of water around this area also have largemouth and small mouth bass, stripers, bluegill, shell cracker, red ear, white bass and a nasty bottom feeder called "Alligator Garr". These fish are known for their alligator like snouts, razor sharp teeth and can get up to ten feet in length.

The Land Between the Lakes area receives over seven million visitors every year, with most of those visitors being dedicated fishermen. They come from far and near to fish this plentiful region. Kentucky Lake has everything that you could possibly want to do, from camping, fishing, hiking, biking, boating, swimming and so much more.

Camping here at Kentucky Lake is like having your own little piece of heaven, filled with a natural beauty that is unlike any other. There are several camping spots here, to many to mention, so I will list my favorites.

Wildcat Creek Recreational Area is located at 28 Wildcat Beach Road Murray, KY 42071, (270) 436-5628. Wildcat Creek is one of Kentucky's best campgrounds to stay at, with all of their campsites right along the waters banks you will have to most amazing lake front views; especially in the morning when the sun rises. No worries if you don't have a boat and want to get out on the water, Kentucky Lake has every kind of boat from small bass boats, fishing boats to sailboats and house boats all available for rent; whatever the need Kentucky Lake has it.

Hillmen Ferry Campgrounds are located at the north end of Kentucky Lake between Moss Creek and Pisgah Bay near Grand Rivers, KY. Every campsite here also offers lake front camping for all of the 380 campsites here. The fishing is just as good here for small mouth bass, crappie and bluegill. The bluegill run in the thousands here due to the abundant amount of May Flies that live and breed in the trees above the lake, only to die after mating, they then become fish food.
