Autumn is the best time to pick your own apples. We have made it a family tradition every year to visit one of our local orchards and pick fresh delicious apples. Our state grows so many varieties it's just a matter of finding an orchard that grows what you like. Apple season beings with with the Hendersonville Annual Apple Harvest Festival in September. Most folks may not know this but apples are one of western North Carolina's main bumper crops. With more than twenty-five orchards in a 30-40 mile radius of Asheville, NC choose an orchard and start picking!

Stepp's Hillcrest Orchard: The Stepp family has been inviting guests to pick their own apples for 40 years at their orchard in Hendersonville, NC. Generations of families have experienced our family farm adventure. You and your family can visit their 70 acre working farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina to pick your own apples and pumpkins - it's good clean fun in a beautiful country setting.

GRANDADS Apples N Such: On a 70 acre family farm located in Hendersonville, NC you can select pre-picked apples or pick your own in the orchards. If you love pumpkins GRANDADS pumpkin patch has pumpkins and jack o lanterns in every size and shape. At The Barn and Country Store, you will find a great selection of fall harvest decorations, apple peelers, apple bakers, and other apple gifts. Mountain Fresh Orchards: Mountain Fresh Orchards invites you to visit their roadside fruit and vegetable stand located in Hendersonville in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina near Asheville. They grow 16 varieties of apples in our 12-acres of orchards, including: Gala Apples, Jonathan Apples, Cortland Apples, Red Delicious Apples, Golden Delicious Apples, Stayman-Winesap Apples, Granny Smith Apples, Mutsu Apples, Rome Beauty Apples, Arkansas Black Apples, Fuji Apples, Honey Crisp Apples, and Jonagold Apples.

Coston Farms and Apple House: Coston Farm is a 4th generation family owned farm and apple orchard located on Chimney Rock Road in Hendersonville North Carolina between I-26 and Chimney Rock Park in the beautiful NC Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville.     These sound like great orchards to visit! By the way, thanks for the comment on my article. I am an Asheville native -- now that I am writing all the time I may move back. It's definitely a beautiful area and my parents are still there. Definitely feeling tempted. Anyway keep up the great work, I really enjoyed reading your article!

    Picking apples with friends and family is a really fun daycation. I must admit I was worn out after walking through acre upon acre of apple trees, but next week there will be freshly canned apple sauce and apple butter . . . not to mention homemade caramel crunch apple pies!!
