Western Wear for the Cowgirl

Women's Western Wear and Fashion

If you're a boot-scootin' mama, then you know that you've got to find something great to wear to the next line dance. Or maybe you're more of the tomboy type, and you'd rather rope and ride than boogie. It doesn't matter which type of woman you are, if you are looking for women's Western wear, you know that you can't just go into the usual mall stores to find what you need.

My first bit of advice is to look around where you live. There might be a Western store in your town or city, even if you're not in Texas or the South. Even upstate New York has their share of stores selling riding and other Western gear, so take a look at your local phone book, or try Yellow Pages online. I would definitely recommend going to a brick and mortar actual store if you are looking to buy things which need fittings, such as boots and possibly hats.

If you're getting a pair of boots, there are several ways to go about this. There are many ready made brands, such as Justin, Durango and Ariat that sell Western boots in many different styles and colors. These boots can range from about $100 and up, so make sure that you know your size if you're going to buy online. Remember that the leather type can make a huge difference in the way that the boot will fit you. A soft suede or leather will fit more loosely and not need as much "breaking in" as a thicker, stiffer leather will. That stiffer leather, however, will be more likely to last longer. One site that I find really has a large selection of boots (as well as hats and other clothing) is Sheplers. This site also seems to have some great sales.

If you have an irregular size, or you're a larger lady with larger calves, you might want to get some boots custom made. At JB Hill, you can either send them your measurements or go to one of their retail stores and they will make you boots. Prices vary.

Hats can be found at most Western stores as well, and these I would definitely recommend trying on somewhere before you buy. A hat can look beautiful online and be quite uncomfortable on your head. Shelplers above sells many hats, and a search on Google will garner you many more stores.

Finally, the clothes! There is one store I'd recommend to any girl looking to polish up her cowgirl style. Barbwire touts itself as "western couture" and I'd agree. These clothes are not your Mama's usual plaid and Wranglers. They are definitely a bit pricier, but if you're trying for a newer, hipper look, I'd go here. For the plus sized woman, Drysdales has a selection of larger clothing, as do many of the other online stores.

Embrace your inner country gal, and show her on the outside!

I loved reading your piece on western fashion. I think you've got the right attitude- and it's all about the right attitude! In reference to boots I would like to point out that most boots brands vary in their sizing and of course toe style and boot style can as well effect sizing. After trying on several pairs you can usually find an average size. When addressing custom boots it is important to note that a good fit will also be determined first by average size information as well as measurements and tracings. Getting a good fit is important to get the best use out of any pair, and of course custom boots can be more expensive so it is vital to get a custom boot maker that specializes in fit not just style or price. CABOOTS.COM (as in Champion Attitude Boots) are a 4th generation boot maker and have the right balance of expertise and pricing. And the customer service is superb whether or not you are a boot newbie or a boot freak. - Keep up the great offerings in western fashion! - Pris
