Westport on Martha Move: It's a Good Thing

Martha Stewart has been saying for six years that she would move from the wealthy Connecticut town of Westport, and this time, it's happening.

Stewart's early 19th century farmhouse home is listed for $9 million. On the market for over two months, real estate experts say that luxury homes can take several months to sell, even those attached to celebrity.

In a statement, Martha expressed her sadness. "I am so sad to be leaving this property which has meant so much to me and my family. The four acres of garden have been tended with great care for more than 30 years and the circa 1805 farmhouse and outbuildings have been the location of wonderful family celebrations, legendary television specials and comfortable gatherings of friends."

Citizens of Westport, however, aren't so sad to see her go. Editor of Westport Magazine, Cristin Marandino, says Stewart wasn't very friendly. "There was certainly no real sense of loss. I think 70 percent of the people who live in Westport have a Martha story. She just wasn't very easy to live with." Neighbors often became angry with Stewart over her film crews and Stewart's behavior.

Her CT home was purchased in 1972 and was the inspiration behind her first book, "Entertaining." Beginning in 1982, many television programs and garden tours took place there. Photographs of her property were also published in various magazines.

Stewart leaves behind famous neighbors; actor Paul Newman and singer Michael Bolton also live in Westport, CT.
