Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix and Other Arizona Water Parks

Cool Family Fun in the Phoenix Sun!

Jan Peterson
When the temperature hits 100 degrees in Phoenix, everyone hits the water! In the Phoenix Metro area there are three primary water parks: Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix, Golfland's Sunsplash, and Golfland's Big Surf.

Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix Water Park

Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix is the newest water park in the Valley of the Sun and is located in North Glendale, at 4243 W Pinnacle Peak Road, where the former Water World was located. The new, expanded 35 acre park was completely renovated for the 2009 summer Grand Opening.

Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix Water Park Attractions:

The Wet 'n' Wild website displays videos of several of their thirty different water features, which they boast to be the best and biggest! They rate each slide or ride on a "Thrillmeter" from "Chilled" to "Extreme". Here is a description of some of the fun available:

-For the "Chilled" type, take a ride on one of the Flyers, where you'll twist and turn down a 48 foot slide! Or float down the Cactus Cooler, a 1200 foot lazy river with a few surprises that will keep you awake!

-For those looking for a "Moderate" thrill experience, take a white water rafting ride on the "Raging River".

-Thrill seekers will like the "Extreme" rides. Slip-slide headfirst at 20 feet per second on a Racer! Get shot like a wet cannonball through a 160 foot tunnel on the "Tornado" and end up in the eye of the storm! Ride the "Serpentine Complex" two colliding slides that empty into a super bowl where centrifugal force will flush you out to splash down. If you dream of experiencing a fall off a 57 foot waterfall, ride "Mammoth Falls". And don't miss the "Maximum Velocity Dueling Coaster, which is claimed to be the first and only race slide of its kind. According to their website it has, "830 feet of hair raising drops and breathtaking curves."

-The kiddos haven't been forgotten. Soak'em Sprayground is an interactive play area with cooling jet sprays. The Desert Palms Playground is a 10,500 sq ft multi level play area of aquatic adventures for the whole family.
The Wet 'n' Wild park has shady retreats, with cabanas available for rent (complete with a ceiling fan and cable television!) . The hours and pricing for the Wet 'n' Wild Season, are posted on their website.

Golfland Sunsplash Water Park

Golfland Sunsplash is located in Mesa, Arizona. The Golfland section is open year round offering miniature golf, fast car raceway, laser tag, and a video arcade with over 200 video games.

During the summer season, the water attractions are available which includes Dragon Tail Slides with 250 ft of tubes that twist and turn, Bonzi Speed Slides that plunge riders toward the lagoon at 25 miles an hour, The Caldron in which the rider is dropped 4 stories and vigorously swirled around an open bowl, The Sidewinder where the G-force slides riders up the wall, the Master Blaster Water Coaster, and Harbor Slides.

For the less adventurous, there are shorter slides on the Shipwreck Rock and an 800 foot endless river perfect for relaxing on a floating inner tube . For the younger splashers, there is the Toddler Tadpole Pool, Bumper Boat Lagoon and the Caribbean Water Works with lots of fun water play.

The hours of operation and pricing are posted on their Website, Golfland Sunsplash, and passes can be purchased for different combinations of attractions. The park can be reserved for birthday parties and corporate events, and business owners can sign up for the VIP program, which offers discounts to their employees.

Golfland Big Surf Water Park

Big Surf was the first water park in the Phoenix metro area, and is located in Tempe, Arizona. Its primary feature, as boasted about on their website, Big Surf, is Waikiki Beach, claimed to be one of the largest wave pools in the world, with 2 million gallons of water.

Continued: They are all tucked away together, seemingly hidden in a corridor by the entrance. I guess their plan is for you to spend more money on over priced bottled water. In my opinion, this is criminal in this climate.

When you do get on the rides, they are some great slides. They are fun and the water is refreshing. We were walking by some kids and one actually commented to another "where do you have to go to be wet n wild?". It was the funniest thing I heard all day.

I havent been to the east side parks but I will never go back to this one unless it's half the price...and I'm telling everyone, if they ask or not.

Here's my take on the "New" Wet n Wild in North Phoenix:

    1) The park is way overpriced. Online DISCOUNTED PRICE was $33 per person w/tax + $5 parking + $5 (small locker). $76 later we're finally ready for a slide. Hurry up and wait. Lines were long.

    2) Teenagers are running this park, or so it seems. The ride operators/lifeguards have a simple job, move people quickly and safely through the ride yet they are lethargic, they have no direction from supervisors, no assertiveness, no leadership skills and no drive to make the customers happy.

    3) The lines are a huge problem. The lines needs shade and misters. The ground is blistering! Also, the lines are not clearly marked for which slides your in line for. e.g. one line will be for three slides and most people in line want to ride one particlar slide, the other two stay empty!

    4) There are 4...only 4!!! drinking fountains in the entire park. They are all tucked away together, seemingly hidden in a corridor by the entranc
