Whang Whang Willy Favorite Basketball Player * **(National Poetry Month, Sports Poem)

L-O-O-O-N-G SHOT WILLY

Mary Naylor confirmed
Way down in one of those Texas towns,
People were havin' trouble with some UFO clowns.
They hovered over the town night, and day.
They wouldn't move. It was clear they intended to stay.

People called the sheriff, who said, "I ain't just a-joshin',
I tell you, folks, I ain't seen NAWTHIN'!"
They wrote the president: "Please send out the National Guard, soon."
He wrote back, "It's not any thing but weather balloons."

The only way people got over their fright,
Was to watch basketball on Saturday night.
A new player, Whang Whang Willy, was their favorite by far.
Pride grew in their hearts; he was their new star!

He bounced around the court, but never took a step.
He never ran out of steam, and was always full of pep.
He seemed to be made of rubber - how he could stretch.
That's why they called him, Whang Whang - he knew how to flex!

If he threw a ball clear across the floor,
It flew right into the hoop and upped the score.
Then, one night, there was a BOOM in the sky!
People ran out to find out what, and why.

They saw the UFO's zoom out of sight.
What a thing to happen on a Saturday night!
Someone cried out, "Where's Whang Whang?
He disappeared when that thing went, BANG!

How they missed Whang Whang Willy,
But they didn't talk about it - afraid they'd look silly.
They did write the president, "Do you have UFO info on this," they cried!
"No," he said, "but, even so, it's already classified."

* This really happened!
