What is Abortion?

Jim Pappas

What is "abortion"? Many will claim it is the removal of some undesirable tissue from within a woman's body. The problem with this claim is that the woman is pregnant. Seriously, what does a woman carry within her womb? Is it something we blow our noses into? Oh, I see, you mean some biological tissue. Does that tissue have any DNA? Yes, it does. What kind of DNA does the "tissue" have? Human DNA. So then, an abortion is the removal of what? A ba…no, can't use that word. An abortion is the removal of some unwanted biological tissue from within the womb of a woman.

You digress; the tissue has human DNA, making the tissue human. No, it's not human; it has not been born yet. So then, the tissue is not actually part of the mother, but is inside the mother, and has human DNA, correct? Yes, but it is not human. Then what is it, ostrich? Why do we call pregnant women expectant mothers? Because they are expecting to give birth to a baby. Is the baby they will give birth to human? Not until it is born.

Such went the argument between people who were for legal abortion on demand and those who were against legal abortion on demand until ultrasound came along. As the technology for ultrasound advanced, and the ability to take continually better pictures of the unborn children advanced, it became ever more clear that these tiny little creatures were (are) indeed human. Their DNA is human, their form is human, they have human parents, and they are born human.

The point of this writing is not to debate whether or not abortion should or should not be legal; the point of this article is to look at just exactly what abortion is.

Plainly put, abortion is the termination of the life of an unborn child. Deny this or not, it is the truth; yet it is only part of the truth. On the surface, this seems to lead us back to the typical argument about whether or not abortion should be legal; however, it goes considerably deeper than that.

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 9:6 Whoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

Elohiym, the Eternal, Self-Existent Almighty God, made a point of letting us know that HE created man (human beings, both male and female) in His own image and likeness. This means that when we end the life of an unborn child, we are ending the life of a being designed and created to be the image and likeness of the Almighty Creator, God. An abortion is the purposeful ending of the image and likeness of God.

By scientific measurements, an unborn child is a human being. Though totally dependent upon the child's mother, the child is still a human being. Since a child has not committed any crime or act of aggression that is threatening to terminate the life of another human being, terminating the life of the unborn child, killing the unborn child is in fact, murder.

Abortion is the murder of a totally defenseless human child (made in the image and likeness of God) who is supposed to be in the safest possible place on earth, the child's mother's womb. Abortion is the purposeful destruction of the living image and likeness of God, and the blessing God wanted that child to be to His creation.
