Whatever type of gym you are enrolled in, whether it's your local small gym or a huge fitness club, it is important that you wear proper clothing. I saw one small gym near our place where they have no rule whatsoever when it comes to attire. The people there were wearing flip-flops for crying out loud. They were practically wearing home clothes. They are comfortable but they are not safe. Imagine a 16-pound dumbbell falling on your foot while on wearing sandals.
Wearing the appropriate type of footwear is really essential for safety. It is always advisable to wear rubber shoes or one that has a sole with excellent grip. Sliding is very dangerous especially if you are carrying weights. There are a few gyms that I saw wherein they had wooden floors that are shiny. I can't imagine a gym with tiled floors. Apart from sliding, dropping a heavy dumbbell on your foot can be really painful.
When it comes to your garment, as long as it's decent it's fine. Do not ever wear a gown, tuxedo, long-sleeved shirts or something formal. Aside from looking funny, it's not comfortable and it is extremely uncomfortable. Wear shorts or jogging pants instead. You can wear overalls or even spandex. No offense but I see women who wear really skimpy and revealing suits. I guess they're just comfortable wearing them but be careful.
It is also important to consider the accessories you are going to bring. Have a towel with you to wipe your sweat. Other accessories are quite useful such as arm bands and knee pads in cases of accidents. Gloves are good for grip. You wouldn't want to drop a 100-pound barbell just because you can't hold it. If you have supports such as shoulder or back supports then use them. They will help you do your workouts without hurting yourself unnecessarily especially if you already have injuries. Don't forget to bring extra clothes when you work out. The clothes you use while working out will most likely be drenched in sweat.
A lot of people would say, your main goal in going to a gym is to exercise and be fit. Other things are secondary such as meeting new people. Wearing the appropriate attire makes you comfortable especially with clothes or accessories that help you in your workout. And most importantly, it will make your workout much safer. Remember, accidents can happen at any time.
