What Do You Believe?

Anything is Possible

Michele Starkey
The New Living Translation of the Bible states Mark 9:23 this way, "Anything is possible if you believe."

It reminds me of a story I heard a long time ago about a businessman driving down a long and winding road in the South. Thinking he must have taken a wrong turn, he tried to retrieve a map from his briefcase on the passenger seat but inadvertently turned the steering wheel as he leaned over and drove off the road and ended up in a ditch. Thankfully there was a farmer working in the field nearby who witnessed the entire mishap.

As the farmer approached the car and saw that the man was not injured and just slightly embarrassed, the farmer offered up his assistance. "My mule, Willard, can pull you out of the ditch."

The man climbed out of his car and saw that the front wheels were sinking in the muck, "Are you certain your mule can pull me out of this?" The old farmer just chuckled and nodded his head, "Yup, Willard can do it alright. Follow me, we'll go and get him."

The men walked across the street and through the field and sure enough, standing in the middle of the meadow was a mule. Albeit, a haggardly looking scruff of a mule. The men led the mule back to the side of the road where the disabled vehicle rested in the ditch.

The farmer hitched up the mule to the front of the bumper and with a snap of the reins he hollered, "Pull Jack! Pull Fred! Pull Ted! C'mon boys! Pull Willard!" And, with that old Willard, the haggard looking mule, pulled the car up and out of the ditch almost effortlessly.

The businessman was astonished and told the farmer, "Thank you so much. Can I ask you one question though, why did you call out all those other names when there was only one mule, Willard, standing there?"

The farmer chuckled and responded, "Well, you see, old Willard is damn near blind. As long as he believes he's got a whole team pulling with him, he doesn't mind pulling at all!"

Now, I ask you again, what do you believe? Just remember, "Anything is possible."

I know from personal experience that what you write is true. I'm a former mental patient without two pennies in my pocket who not only went to college, but graduated with two BA degrees and one Associates degree. All people like us need is a hand up.
