Types of Programs and Their Advantages
If a person wishes to pursue a degree program online they will find that there are many types of programs available. Some schools offer flex programs which allow their students to take courses online and at the school, thereby giving the student more flexibility to work with their schedule. Many schools offer the traditional option, the flex program, and a schedule that is completely online.
Flexible Scheduling - Certain schools offer students the chance to take all of their coursework over the internet. This can be an amazing opportunity for adult learners that have to work full-time and maintain a family life in addition to pursuing higher education. This is also fantastic for students that are attempting to work their way through college.
Location - Online courses are a great option for students that live in rural areas that do not wish to relocate or drive a long distance on a daily basis to attend classes. This is also a plus for student in metro areas that are not living conveniently close to a school; this type of program allows them to avoid long traffic-filled commutes.
Potential Disadvantages of Online Degree Programs
The advantages of online degree programs and classes are pretty clear; they allow flexibility many students need, and they allow individuals who may not be able to attend college without the option of online programs to get a higher education. This type of program however, also has disadvantages.
Credibility - Although the acknowledgement of the validity of online degrees is growing, there are still many individuals (particularly those not educated on the matter or comfortable with the internet) that may equate a degree obtained from a regionally accredited institution to one from a diploma mill.
Cost - Unless you are seeking to obtain a degree from a state university or college that you reside in that offers in-state rates even for online programs, the cost of obtaining a degree online will likely be high since many of the institutions that are at the forefront of the online degree world are private schools. In most cases, this cost is not higher than a student would have to pay to attend the same private school on-campus.
Motivation - Many individuals worry that they will not be self-motivated enough to complete their schoolwork in a timely manner since this type of learning requires a lot of self-study time. However, in reality self-motivation is required for all forms of higher education, and a student may find it easier to motivate himself to work on a project in his pajamas at his computer, than he would if he had to get ready and drive to a class.
Although online programs may not be for every student, they do offer an option that allows many individuals to gain a higher level of education that may not have had that opportunity otherwise.

Post a CommentMy husband took some online courses and found the experience kinda "flat". There was a long lag time between making a point and getting a response, making meaningful discussions very difficult.

Good information, I'm glad I read this! I am enrolled in an online medical transcribing course, and I'm finding that I really need to force the self-motivation part. But I'm determined to finish, and finish well. My sister gets paid well doing transcribing for a doctor's office, and the only way I can acquire any type of income is from home.
