A plant being grown without soil is hydroponics. The name is derived from two Greek words; Hydro and Ponics. Literally translated, it means: "Water Labor." Hydroponics allows the plants to receive nutrients directly from their roots, rather than through the soil. Hydroponics allows plants to be grown in a variety of ways. Hydroponic plants can be grown in gravel, water, sand, or even in the air.

Traditionally grown plants have to rely on the soil to give them the nutrients they need to live and grow. As mentioned, hydroponic plants are given their nutrients directly to the root. This allows for more efficiency for the plant. This efficiency allows the plant to grow faster and larger than those which are grown in the soil.

Plants grown in hydroponic gardens save space. When a plant is in the soil, the root has to grow out far and wide to look for nutrients. The roots in a hydroponic garden do not have to spread out so far, because they don't have to seek nutrients. The nutrients are being applied directly to the root. This allows more plants to be in smaller amounts of space when they are grown in a hydroponic garden.

Plants in the soil have to rely on the physical climate they are in. For example, they are at the mercy of their environment when it comes to light, temperature, humidity, and water. Plants grown in a hydroponic garden can be given whatever amount of light, temperature, humidity, and water they need to thrive, on a consistent basis.

Soil based plants are susceptible to pests, weeds, and soil borne diseases. With hydroponic gardens these concerns vanish. The pests that live in soil can not attack the plants. Also, because there is no soil, weeds cannot grow. The same goes for the soil borne diseases. No soil means the plants can not get sick from common soil based diseases.

Soil based plants are very labor intensive. It takes a bit time commitment to care for them. Hydroponics, however, is a very easy way to grow vegetation. Soil based plants could not be neglected for any length of time. The plants need tended to daily. This is not true with hydroponic plants. The process of caring for hydroponic gardens can be fully automated. Hydroponic gardens use way less water than traditional soil based gardens. Usually, the water used in hydroponic gardens is recycled and used repeatedly. Traditional soil based farming uses massive amounts of water, which is wasted; due to runoff and evaporation.

Hydroponic gardening has numerous benefits. The benefits of growing plants hydroponically largely outweigh those of growing plants traditionally in the soil. Hydroponic gardening does not require labor intensive work. Hydroponic gardening is easy, safe, and fun.
