What is a "Benefits Schedule" with My Pet Health Insurance?

Evan Nash
One of the biggest complaints of all insurance fields and companies in general is that they do not say how much they will pay for any service before it is rendered. There are practical reasons behind this that aren't always communicated that deal with fraud and abuse of insurance related products. However, some types of insurance like pet health insurance are trying a new strategy to reach out to their customers and patients. A benefits schedule will give you almost an exact idea of the amount to be paid for a particular service or treatment.

This is not to say that all insurance companies that offer coverage for pets are doing the same thing, but there are a few innovative ones out there. With a benefits schedule you can make much more informed decisions about the coverage you elect because you will have a clear idea how much out of pocket you could be. A benefits schedule is almost exactly as it sounds. It is a schedule of how much the insurance company will pay for any service or treatment.

People who are not familiar with insurance and the headaches that are caused by it will be interested to know why this is important. Many pet insurance companies have coverage that is excluded regardless of who you are. The coverage is excluded because it may be pre-existing or simply too expensive and widespread for the insurance company to offer. Beyond these exclusions is the added maze, usually, of finding out how much will be paid for.

With companies that publish their benefits schedule for you to see the guess work is cut out. You will know exactly how much you need to save or put aside for a service because you will be able to see in real time. One good tip to consider using is that if you see how much the service will cost you should call your veterinarian and see if it is in line for what they charge.

If your vet is ok with the amount that will be paid by the insurance company, even though it may cost him a few dollars, you could be out of pocket nothing at all. Veterinarians view this as advantageous as well because they get a customer that is guaranteed to pay and who truly cars about their pet. Working out deals like this with your veterinarian could save everyone in the long run and everyone will be back on track because of you.
