What Are the Best Colors to Wear During the Winter

Best Fall Colors This Year

Malina Debrie
When its cold outside and the temperature keeps dropping, what are the best colors to wear to help keep you warm? Yes, there are colors that are best suited for each season of the year. During the winter, the darker the color the warmer your body. The reason you tend to stay warm when wearing darker clothing is because the color draws the heat from the outside as well as holding onto the body heat. Darker colors keep the body warm. Your body soaks in the heat from two sources: your body and the sun. To stay warm when the temperature outside is cold, the darker the color the more heat retained and absorbed.

Black worn during the winter months is a color that tends to draw the heat from the sunlight. It keeps the cool air at bay and allows the warm rays of the sun to penetrate keeping you warm and cozy. Wear a black blazer under a black coat, black pants and shoes. Layer a couple of shirts under the blazer and if the temperature is below 20 degrees, black will help the body maintain a temperature above freezing. Or you can psych yourself into believing you're not freezing. Remember, black absorbs heat and does not reflect it.

Dark Purple is another great color for the winter months. Considering it's regal and royal look, not only will your body be warm, it will be beautiful and warm. Purple is a combination of deep red tones, browns and blues. Purple can even be a mixture of black, reds and browns. The red tone in all purples tends to attract or draw the heat from the sun. Red is a 'hot' color. When you want to be warm, wear a color with red or red tones. When you want to stay cool, steer away from red attire.

Deep Dark Navy Blue's are great for the winter to keep you warm. Remember our military guys in the navy and marines wear blue. That's where we get the descriptive term for the color; 'Navy Blue.' Like purple, navy blue is rich, it's regal and royal. In addition navy blue is a color that seems to demand respect for the individual wearing the color. Perhaps it has something to do with seeing our military men and women in the color. When you see a formation of military officers in navy, you want to stand and give them a round of applause. Navy is a jewel of a winter color.

Deep Dark Rich Browns are back in fashion and perfect for the winter months. For years, browns were kind of left out. Fashion gurus did not even consider brown in their designer blouses, pants, suits or anything. Brown was simply not given the respect it deserved. That has now changed. Browns are on the scene in everything, every color and every accessory. Wearing brown is no longer considered dull and uneventful. Pairing brown with the right accessories or even pale pastels can make a gorgeous outfit even more distinctive. And then, in addition to its beauty, brown is a color that keeps you warm.

Winter White
is also a great color for the winter. While it is lighter than the others mentioned, it gives you a bit of variety in the tones and the way it can be worn.

Yes, it's all blacks and dark blues for me. I feel the cold something rotten, and November in the UK this year is unseasonably cold. Brrrr!

Some colors look and 'feel' warmer than others... I was actually shocked when I got a white parka years ago while living in Wisconsin, and it actually kept me warm!
