What the Bible Has to Say About the Omnipotence of God

The Power of God

In this article I would like to share with you what the Bible has to say about the Omnipotence of God. First of all we need to know that the word omnipotent only shows up in the book of Revelation. You can locate this in the King James Version of Revelation 19:6. Although the word does not show up anywhere else in the Bible, the idea of God's omnipotence is throughout the Bible. I looked up the word omnipotent in the dictionary and the definition of it is unlimited authority. This means that God has the authority on all things. It says that He is all-powerful. Below I would like to give you some scriptures that talk about God's power and how it affects us.

The first two scriptures that I would like to share with you are Genesis 18:14 and Jeremiah 32:17. These scriptures talk about that nothing is too hard for God. He can do all things. Two scriptures in the New Testament that tell us the same thing are Luke 1:37 and Matthew 19:26. These scriptures tell us that nothing is impossible with God. Again He can do all things.

Some of us might ask though, "If God is all-powerful, why does He allow bad things to happen to us?" There are a few scriptures in the Bible that might help to answer that question for us. The first scripture that comes to my mind is Romans 8:28. This scripture tells us that all things work out for the best to those that love God. It states that we have been called to do His purpose. It is a hard thing to be in a position like this. We do not understand when the bad things are happening. We do not understand how they are going to be good in our lives. But according to this scripture, they will work to our best. The next scripture that comes to my mind is John 9:3. There was a man that was blind and Jesus' disciples asked him why this bad thing had happened to him. Jesus told the disciples that it was so that God's work could be made manifest in him. Obviously God allows bad things into our lives to work in us.

This gives us a little bit of an answer to why bad things happen, but the most important thing to understand is that the Bible tells us that as humans we cannot understand the mind of God. There are scriptures to back this up. The scriptures are Romans 9:20, 21. This scripture tells us that we do not have a right to tell God what to do with us. He is the boss. Another scripture is Isaiah 40:12-15. This scripture talks about and asks the question who has instructed God what to do. It says that no one has. The next scripture on this matter is Job 38-42. This is a section of scripture that talks about God as the maker of all and that He is the boss of all. Ultimately, we have to realize that He is the boss. This can be a hard thing to do. It can be helpful to look back on the scriptures in the paragraph above and realize that God is on our side. He does want everything to work out for our best.

Another thing that can be encouraging is that we see from example of scripture that God is in control of the following areas. He is in control of sickness, the devil, and storms. God gave us these examples in scripture to encourage us. We can know that He is on our side even though He is the great Omnipotent one. Some scriptures that you can look up for examples in the book of Matthew are Matthew 8:1-15-Jesus takes care of the sick; Matthew 8:16 and Matthew 8:28-32-Jesus is in control of the devil, and Matthew 8:23-27-Jesus is in control of storms. This chapter is very encouraging. Think about what else is in the Bible; if just one chapter is encouraging, what about the rest of the Bible? We can go there and read to find many answers to our questions.
