Conversely, can you think of anyone in your life who is a good example of pride? I know I don't have to look very far, all I have to do is look in the mirror. I don't like when people say negative things about me because I feel like I "deserve" better. I like to put myself first and have my own way. I get irritated when people take my words lightly.
It is a constant struggle in my flesh to demonstrate a humble spirit. However, we have a perfect example of humility is Jesus Himself. Philippians 2:3-11 is referred to as the Kenosis passage. In this portion of Scripture Jesus is shown to be the ultimate example of humility.
"Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." Don't do anything looking for credit or the praise of men. The praise of God is greater! Consider other people better than yourself, not just in action or in pretense, but honestly from the heart.
"Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others." This does not mean that we need to have our noses in other people's business. It means that we are supposed to look out for the needs of others.
"Christ Jesus...made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men." What humility! Can you imagine God Himself being willing to become a human person, walking on the earth and living among sinful men? That's what He did.
"...He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." It's hard enough to imagine an Almighty God becoming man for us. Even more amazing is that He was willing to place His life in the hands of sinners to be mocked, scourged and crucified.
The end of the passage talks about God glorifying Jesus because of His great humility and sacrifice. The next time your flesh rises up and wants to assert itself over another person or render a judgment about another, remember Christ's awesome example of humility.
