What is a Bipolar Disorder Manic Episode?
Manic Episodes of Bipolar Disorder and How to Recognize One
Someone who is suffering from bipolar disorder can go through a manic episode often if not treated. I am bipolar and even though I am on medication for it I still sometimes go through manic episodes. I don't have the severe rage often and I never have the out of control sexual behavior or the need to spend more money than usual, but I do sometimes have the feeling of being on top of the world. I also feel more energetic when going through a manic episode. I talk faster and want to take on more writing projects than I can handle. The manic episode of bipolar disorder for me usually lasts for a couple of hours. Then I will crash and feel really tired all of a sudden. It is as if all of the energy I was feeling before was sucked right out of me.
What to Look for in a Bipolar Disorder Manic Episode
If someone you know is showing signs of acting different and you think it may be bipolar disorder, look for the signs. The signs of a bipolar disorder manic episode include sudden and extreme rage, invincibility or a belief that nothing can hurt them, changes in sleep patterns, restlessness, risky behavior and change in appetite.
Be careful if they have sudden rage because it can be dangerous to you or them. A person suffering from a bipolar disorder manic episode may be delusional or have hallucinations. Wearing brightly colored clothing during a manic episode is also a sign.
What to do if You See These Signs of a Manic Episode of Bipolar Disorder
If you notice any of the above mentioned signs in a loved one, talk to them about their symptoms and try to get them to a psychiatrist. They need medication and therapy to control these symptoms.
There are things you can do, as the friend or family member to protect yourself and your finances during your loved one's bipolar disorder manic episodes. First of all, it is important that you see a therapist also and get help for what you have gone through with your loved one. Also, if your loved one is spending too much money during a manic episode, you should keep the checkbook, cash, debit and credit cards and pin numbers in a safe place where only you can get to them.
If your friend or family member goes into sudden rage during a manic episode, you should leave and go somewhere safe until he or she gets the help they need to control their manic episodes. People suffering from untreated bipolar disorder can be dangerous when going through a manic episode. Of course you want to take care of them but it is important to take care of yourself also.
