What Boise State's Bowl Win Over Oklahoma Means for Small Division One Schools

A Win for the Little Guys

The dramatic high scoring thriller in College football featuring the Oklahoma Sooners against the Boise State Bronocs was a true classic football game that will go down in the history of college football as one of the best games ever played.

This College Bowl game separated itself from the rest of the bowl games because it featured an undefeated team in a mid major conference against a powerhouse team that has been a giant in college football for the past decade. This game was supposed to show that a mid major team could not compete on the same level as a major team from a power conference. However, when the dust settled, those theories were thrown out the door. For one game at least, Boise State showed that they were a team that belonged with the big boys of college football. This win for Boise State wasn't just a win for the Boise State players, coaches and fans. But it was a victory for all of the football teams in mid major teams who critics say don't have the talent and skill to compete with teams from major Division 1 conferences. This was also a victory for college football as this was by far the most exciting Bowl game this year and the most exciting game in college football this year.

The Boise State College Bowl game against the Oklahoma Sooners showcased some high powered offenses as almost 30 points were scored in the last 90 seconds of the game including two pivotal touchdowns by the Broncos. Trick plays were also used by Boise State which made the game all the more interesting and exciting. As a football fan, I love watching trick plays in action and they are fun to see and players love them. The Boise State Broncos had not one, but two trick plays in their game against the Sooners.

Boise State did a hook and ladder play in which a wide receiver caught the ball and then pitched it to his teammate behind him. Then the player sped toward the end zone as the Sooner players watched the play work to perfection against them. Then the Broncos used a State of Liberty play in which the quarterback faked a throw to a wide receiver in the flat who had several offensive linemen there to trick the defenders into thinking they were going to block in the play. Then the quarterback faked a throw downfield and behind his back the running back took the ball and ran towards the end zone for the two point conversion score to win the game as the Sooner players looked on with shock.

Sports talk shows ran with the story the next day and the Boise State win led to further controversy of having a playoff system in which Boise State could face another ranked team in the top 10 to prove how good they really are. However, other critics speculated that Boise State would be unable to win more than one big game because they were not as deep a team as other power conference teams and all their effort and energy went into their game against the Sooners. Still, for one night, it was college football at its best
