The first thing that we want to look at is creation. Genesis explains to us how everything came to be. It tells us on which day God created certain things. It tells how He created these things. Things were done in an orderly fashion. This is our first glimpse into the personality of God. In this portion of Genesis we get to see that man was created. His name was Adam. The Bible states that Adam was lonely therefore God created woman. Her name was Eve. Eve was placed into Adam's life as a companion.
The next thing that we get to see in Genesis is sin. We get to understand what God considers sin. Sin is basically considered disobedience to God. God gave Adam and Eve a command and they did not follow it. They disobeyed and because of their disobedience they would be cast out of paradise. In this portion of Genesis we get to understand the consequence of sin. God explains to Adam and Eve that they are now going to die. Before this, they did not have to worry about death. Now we see the introduction of death.
After Adam and Eve are kicked out of paradise they start to have sexual relations. They are considered married. God tells them to be fruitful and multiply. Eve ends up getting pregnant and delivers a son. Here we get to see that pain is introduced into the world. This was one of the curses because Adam and Eve disobeyed God. This portion of scripture explains how the beginning of earth's population began. Adam and Eve would have many children.
As time goes on and there are more people sin increases in the world. The Book of Genesis continues to show the idea that there are always consequences for sin. At one point you will see that God actually wipes out all of mankind except just a chosen few. The reason that these few are saved is because they were obedient to God. We get to see that God desires obedience and wants to have a great relationship with His people. This book's purpose is to help us to understand that eventually God would want to intervene and stop the death process. He did not want destruction to continue. In the book of Genesis there are small glimpses of what He was already starting to plan for the future. He would want to rescue His people and put things back in the right order in which they began.
This is a wonderful Book of the Bible and it is the foundation for what the Bible is all about. If you read it you will then be able to understand what the rest of the Bible is about. The rest of the Bible is basically a history of people who are either obedient or disobedient to God. It talks about the consequences of both lifestyles. The Old Testament shows and foretells about the preparation for a Savior that will help people be delivered from disobedience. The New Testament talks about the Savior. It talks about those who accepted the intervention that He brought to the world.
