What Book Reviewers Look For

What to Expect when Your Book is Reviewed

Adrienna Turner
Follow directions or guidelines from the book clubs and review groups that will give you review. Carefully read how long it takes them to do your review? This has been a major issue for authors versus book clubs or reviews in general. What is appropriate behavior when the review is late? How do book clubs handle this matter? For instance, I learned some of the ins and outs before starting my review group being a book reviewer for a book club. Do you only rely on one person to review your book? Review what type of genres or books they accept. This can have a major affect on your review due to books they normally do not accept or read.

Some reviewers require media kit, press release, and bios with your books. Dream 4 More Reviews requires two books and bios with my reviews since you will also get an interview on my site or BTR show.
Dream 4 More Literary Consulting Firm will require bios. In addition, we usually research, but can be time consuming and with other things, this is a plus.

Some reviewers also would like to accept the review, not just submitting books without their permission of acceptance. We can be behind or reading certain books in that given time to review. Then, when we are late, you get upset.

Do not send your books to friends and family-since they may lie to you not to hurt your feelings or tell you the truth about your book.

Do not be offended or upset on the low rating reviews, but learn from them. Most reviews are based on a matter of opinion. However, on my site, Dream 4 More Reviews has the reviewers send in their sample reviews, bios (what they like to read), questionnaire, and time span to finish a review. This way, I know what time schedule and books they enjoy reading to make sure it is an honest review.

Build thick skin. Some people will love something and others will hate or not understand what the author is trying to say (their message), but we can take notes and learn from it when writing our other books. Our focus is to have a legacy, and later build an audience who appreciates our work and sales!

Do not only rely on reviews, go to pubic appearances, book signings, book events to conferences and seminars to learn the craft and speak to well-known authors, and writers group or critique groups that charges fees to develop and invest in your dream. I have done all this, and decided to start a business to help others.

"My number one suggestion would be for authors to not expect their book back once they send it. And if they do, make sure the reviews knows and understands this before sending the book."-Joey Pinkney

As a book reviewer, I get book recommendations on Goodreads, where people want me to buy their books on their sites or Amazon.com; when they need to read my dreams4more.com site to get a book review. Please review my submission guidelines, do not send me a request to give you a review by asking a book reviewer to purchase your book. It is not that we do not purchase books outside of reviewing, but this is not a good way to get us to give you a review. Find another way to sell yourself as an author. Or paraphrase it ,where it is not a turn-off.
