What is the Breast Cancer Gene and How Do You Know If You Have It?

Sarah Rachel
Researchers at the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute of the University of Pennsylvania says, there are many different types of gene mutations which are called the breast cancer gene, and some of them carry more risk than others. According to genetic counselor, Rachael Brandt M.S., "the two most common breast cancer genes that are inherited are BRCA1 and BRAC2." When these genes are abnormal there is a 10% risk for all types of breast cancer. Typically when one family member is diagnosed with breast cancer other family members are encouraged to get tested for the breast cancer genes. You will need to see your doctor for proper blood work to find out if you are a carrier. Sometimes people who have a family history of ovarian cancer or other female cancers may also be carriers of the breast cancer gene.

You can reduce your risk

You can't completely eliminate your risk because just having breasts all by itself is a risk factor whether you're a woman or a man. However, there are things you can do to help reduce your risk of developing breast cancer.

Lifestyle Factors

Eat a healthy well balanced diet with plenty of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Breast cancer has also been linked to certain pesticides so try to always buy organic. Avoid meat products that contain antibiotics or hormones. Many types of breast cancer are hormone driven and our diet is influenced by this. If you smoke it is best to stop smoking right away because cigarette smoking can increase your risk dramatically. Join a support group to help kick the habit. If you drink alcohol it is also a good idea to cut back or stop all together. Also women who have children before the age of 30 have a lower risk of developing breast cancer. Breastfeeding also provides a great deal of protection as well.

Eliminate Certain Products

Avoid using products that contain parabens because these ingredients can have estrogen like effects on the body because they mimic estrogen hormones. These preservatives are found in many products such as lotions, shampoos, and skin care products.

See your doctor

It is important to do monthly self breast exams and see your doctor at least once each year for routine screening if you are over the age of 45. However, if you do find that you have the breast cancer gene you will need to undergo additional testing and screening yearly at a much younger age. Prevention is the best medicine.
