What to Bring on a Camping Trip

Heather Wood
Camping is one activity that most people either love or hate. The truth is that a camping trip can be loads of fun, if you are properly prepared. Essential items are needed if you plan to make the most of your excursion!

Bedding:

Camping is a lot more fun if you create a sleeping environment that is both warm and comfortable. In the hot summer months, this may not be as much of an issue. If mornings are cool and damp, however, you will need items that keep you warm and dry.

Ÿ Air Mattress - There are several options for air mattresses. You can purchase air mattresses that have built-in, battery-powered air pumps. Be warned that these mattresses often lose air faster than those you must pump up by hand or with an air pump. Keep a patch kit on hand in case of a leak.

Ÿ Pillows - Sleeping is far more comfortable when you are able to use your own pillows from home.

Ÿ Sleeping Bag - A sleeping bag that contains a hood-like device to cover the head is especially helpful in cooler temperatures.

Ÿ Waterproof Pad - If you plan to sleep just on the ground, have a waterproof pad to place under your sleeping bag in case condensation forms on the inside of the tent.

Clothing:

Being unprepared can ruin a camping trip. Weather can change suddenly, so you need to have the right attire for the season. Bring an empty bag to serve as your laundry bag for dirty clothes.

Ÿ Hat - You will want a hat to protect your face from sun or foul weather.

Ÿ Hiking Shoes - If you are camping in a mountainous area, you will want hiking boots to protect your feet during any expeditions.

Ÿ Jacket - A waterproof jacket will help keep you warm at night and provide insulation from any rain.

Ÿ Jeans - Pack at least one extra pair of jeans in case you get wet due to rain or a fall in a river or lake. You can always put the wet pair near the campfire to dry off.

Ÿ Pajamas - Bring at least one pair of pajamas for sleeping at night.

Ÿ Shirts - Plan to pack both t-shirts and flannel shirts. In many areas, even a summer's night can become rather cool as the sun sets. Layering your clothing is the best way to keep warm.

Ÿ Socks - You must expect to need extra socks. Especially if you are camping in an area near water or that has muddy trails.

Ÿ Swimsuit - If you are camping near a river, pond, lake, or ocean, you will want a swimsuit so that you can go swimming. Bring a few towels for drying off!

Cooking:

Your campsite will most likely supply you with a campfire ring, but there are items that you need to bring.

Ÿ Cleaning Supplies - To assist you in cleaning up your cooking utensils and pans.

Ÿ Cooking Utensils

Ÿ Cooler - For your drinks.

Ÿ Fire starters - While you will round up your own wood and kindling, you need something to get the kindling to catch.

Ÿ Matches - Make sure they are in a waterproof container.

Ÿ Pots/Pans - Cast Iron pans are especially good for camping

Ÿ Water Bottles - Not all water is safe to drink. You can boil it or just bring jugs of water.

Emergency Supplies:

It is important to carry a first-aid kit. You should have:

Ÿ Ace Bandages

Ÿ Antiseptic ointment and wipes

Ÿ Bandages

Ÿ Burn Cream

Ÿ Butterfly Closures

Ÿ Cold Packs

Ÿ Gauze Pads

Ÿ Hydrogen Peroxide

Ÿ Pain relievers

Ÿ Medical Tape

Ÿ Tweezers

Personal Items:

If you are camping for an extended period, you will want to have the necessary hygienic supplies.

Ÿ Bug Repellent

Ÿ Compass

Ÿ Deodorant

Ÿ Environmentally friendly shampoo, conditioner, and soap.

Ÿ Flashlight with extra batteries

Ÿ Jack Knife

Ÿ Lip Protectant

Ÿ Medications

Ÿ Sunscreen

Ÿ Toilet Paper

Ÿ Toothbrush and toothpaste

Ÿ Tracking Device - Necessary in winter if you are camping up a mountain.

Shelter:

Your campsite will provide you with some basics, usually a picnic table and fire ring. You need to provide:

Ÿ Axe

Ÿ Extra Stakes - In case of breakage.

Ÿ Hammer

Ÿ Tarp - For both the ground under the tent and for shade during the day.

Ÿ Tent
