Some Businesses Are Thriving During Our Recession/Depression

Shana Dines
What Businesses are booming during our Recession? It is interesting to see that even during times of financial stress and depression in a society, that there are businesses that are thriving. I don't think many of us would disagree with the fact that we are at least in a recession. I found it fascinating to hear on the news that many businesses are thriving.

Automobile repair shops are thriving because many people are investing in getting their older cars repaired instead of buying new ones. Mechanics are doing very well in our sagging economy. People are getting their transmissions replaced and other repair work done instead of spending unnecessary money on new cars. I can relate to this, as our car is over 10 years old. Luckily my husband is a mechanic and can repair our vehicles for quite a while before we have to replace them.

My son works for a high-end carpet cleaning service. He can't afford to go to college right now and isn't really that interested at this time to pursue it. He has not only made a good hourly wage and commission but makes over $24.00 an hour on overtime. The owner of the company said that many people are having their carpets cleaned instead of replacing them. Their clientele is a mostly higher income customers but many are just having their carpets cleaned because it is much more affordable.

People are having their shoes repaired instead of buying new shoes. I find that interesting because most of my shoes are pretty inexpensive. I did find a very expensive pair of sandals in the Goodwill though that is worth having repaired instead of buying new ones. Many people are having their good shoes resoled instead of spending a lot of money on new ones. I thought that most shoe repair shops would be out of business with so many inexpensive shoe stores in business. This is not true according to the news.

Last but not least, people are having their clothes repaired instead of lavishly replacing them. Suits are being repaired as well as zippers are being replaced in expensive clothing. Many people are buying clothes that can be washed instead of going to the dry cleaners to have their clothes cleaned.

Not only are these businesses thriving, but it is also helping the environment. There is less trash and people are throwing things away a lot less. We as a society are doing more to conserve and take care of what we have instead of being so wasteful.

Looking on the bright side of things there are some really positive things about the recession that we are living in today. I can't say that I like it but I am trying to be positive. We actually, as a family, have been pretty conservative all along, but we have to tighten our belts even more than we did in the past. It is a real commitment as a society to work together to help each other and ourselves. Happy New Year and I hope this year is better for all of us.

What a great idea for an article! I heard today that McDonald's had a huge profit for last year. It seems that people cannot afford to eat at more expensive places and are opting for the kid's favorite place. I'm sure there are more businesses that are benefiting from the recession.

I am hanging onto my gig with my fingernails. Therefore but the Grace of God go I... I've lived through this before, though, and things do turn around again eventually. If you're resourceful and live within your means, anyone can weather this storm.

Stephen... teachers are losing jobs too. Tighter budgets often means job elimination in education too.

Excellent article. My Father was a teacher and that fared well during the great depression. It should still be a pretty secure job today.
