Newlyweds are pretty easy to buy for, because they need just about everything for their new home. Of course, you want to check their registries so they don't return from their honeymoon to a room full of toasters. Here are some gift ideas that may or may not be on their list.
Digital camera - The key here is to get a camera that will last a long time, including when they have kids. Getting them a high-zoom digital camera is perfect, albeit rather expensive. Kodak's EasyShare camera with 10x Optical Zoom costs $255, but a Canon Power Shot will cost about $200 more.
Coffee table - I like the black 3-tier London coffee table, which costs $96. Of course, you may not like black furniture as much as I do. In that case, you can pick up a nice light-oak colored Mission-Style Coffee Table for half the price.
Kitchen carts - These are versatile, so the newlyweds can have a snack in the living room or enjoy breakfast in bed. You can pick up a 34-inch-tall wooden kitchen cart for $105.
Dinnerware - Usually, this will be on the registry. But often, wedding guests won't buy it. They can't buy all of the dinnerware and don't want to buy just a piece of the puzzle. So often, the newlyweds don't get the dinnerware they request. If you're late with a gift, this is the perfect time to ask the couple if they still need some plates.
Gift Cards - These are always great. Ask the couple where they like to shop, or just get a gift card for the place where they are registered. No matter how many gifts a couple receives, there is always something they really needed that they didn't get.
Appliances - Check the registry and make sure someone got them a good coffee maker, tea kettle and toaster. If those things are on the list, that means they don't want to use the clunky relics from their single days. As far as more exotic appliances, they don't need everything under the sun. Just make sure they have a good blender/food processor. Oster makes one for $34 that does just about everything.
Cooking items - Now it's time to give the newlyweds some versatile items that can be useful when they have kids. The Presto Tilt 'n' Drain Griddle is perfect for frying up eggs, bacon and hamburgers. It only costs $30.
For the same price, you can get a six-quart Rival Crock Pot with a bonus Mini Crock Pot. This is great for working families, especially on the weekends when nobody feels like cooking. You can just throw stuff into the pot in the morning, and you've got a hot dinner waiting when you return from your weekend fun.
Finally, the newlyweds should have something for outdoor grilling. You can get them a George Foreman Electric Bar-B-Que Grill for $58. GE also makes an Extra Large Indoor Outdoor Grill for $35.
