What to Buy a Wealthy Dad for Father's Day

Gift Buying for the Father Who Has Everything

While most people are able to get away with giving their fathers yet another tacky tie on Father's Day, you know that going the cheap route and hoping that your father will just appreciate the thought won't work in your case. Your father will know that the shirt you picked out is a blend, that the appliance you selected can expect a short life span, or that the fishing pole you purchased might as well be bamboo and a string. Being wealthy gives one a special insight into the quality of day to day items, and as the child of a wealthy dad, you know you will have to do better than the average "kid" on Father's Day.

It's not that rich dads won't appreciate the thought when you buy them that cost efficient gift, it's just that they might wonder how much thought you really put into a gift that doesn't suit them at all. More commonly, though, rich fathers will already have just about anything their children can afford to buy them. So what can you give the father who has everything for Father's Day?

First, consider upgrading the basic accessories he uses for his leisure time. If your father is an avid grilling man, get him a stainless steel grilling tool set. If your father loves to play golf, buy him monogrammed golf club links. Buying rich fathers gifts that they would feel a bit silly buying for themselves, but would love to have, can be a very rewarding venture for you both. Do be sure to mix the right amount of functionality with extravagance. Otherwise, the gift may become more of a burden than a blessing.

Next, consider buying your father a good time, rather than just a good gift. In other words, send him to an event that he'll love. Whether it's a ball game, a theater performance, or an evening at a high end restaurant, take him (or send him with friends) to a place that will force him to have fun, no matter how busy he may be. Granted, most wealthy fathers did not get where they are today without working long hours, and most will have packed schedules until the day they die. However, you can be open about this gift and let your father know what you are getting him. Let him know you'd like to give him tickets to an event or reservations to a special place on the date and time of his choice. He'll get to choose the block of his schedule that is the most convenient for a little "forced" fun that he will be relieved to be getting.

Next, consider personalizing a sentimental gift for your wealthy father this Father's Day. While he may be able to buy anything he needs, he can't always get everything he wants. Some things have to come from his kids. In other words, some of the things he wants most are completely up to you to give him. Get creative with this one. Use a self-publishing website (such as www.lulu.com) to create a mini-book on a special moment from your lives or on your childhood memories with him. Buy him an elegant watch with the birth dates or names of all of his children on the back. Whatever you do, don't make a sentimental gift too obvious. In other words, don't give your wealthy father a wallet with your initials spread across it. The gift should be useful, while the personalized message should be discrete. If the gift will be more ornamental and used for a keepsake at home, such as a self published mini-book, more detail is fine.

Finally, go tech with your wealthy father's Father's Day gift this year. No matter how rich our dads can get, they are usually not going to be as up to date as we are. Use this advantage. Buy him a new digital camera, a video recorder to replace his 1985 model, or a new software program that will make his life easier. Keep the gift in line with his interests, and make sure it won't be too difficult or time consuming to learn how to use.

What do you buy the father who has everything on Father's Day? Let's recap. Either upgrade his basic supplies, give him an event rather than a tangible gift, order a sentimental but useful present, or give him a tech gift that he's sure to not already own. Buying a rich father a gift is always a challenge, but keep these guidelines in mind and switch it up each year for variety. The point is to go above and beyond the average person's idea of a Father's Day gift. Shouldn't you be striving to do that anyhow?
